REPORT: INDONESIA

Mergers and acquisitions in Indonesia’s banking industry are projected to flourish this year as foreign investors, mainly from Japan and South Korea, have begun to acquire local banks while big state-owned and private lenders have also shown interest in acquiring the smaller ones. We look at how this is generating work for the company’s corporate lawyers.

FEATURE: LITIGATION

On January 18, Hong Kong and Mainland China signed a landmark agreement considerably expanding the breadth of judgments mutually recognized and enforced between them. This makes Hong Kong more attractive for IP and commercial disputes against Mainland Chinese parties. We speak to lawyers to break this down.

REPORT: THAILAND

In early March, Thailand approved a cybersecurity law, asserting government control over the internet. However, it has given rise to concerns related to privacy and the rule of law, and foreign businesses are also worried about the compliance burden. Lawyers weigh in.

FEATURE: ALSP

The alternative legal service provider scene is getting crowded in Asia, with Herbert Smith Freehills’ ALT, Pinsent Masons’ Vario and Elevate among those looking to make headway in Hong Kong and Singapore. But with pickup still slow, where do they see the areas for growth?

FEATURE: COMPETITION LAW

Last year saw an increase in antitrust enforcement throughout the Asia-Pacific region, with the Philippines and Indonesia among the leading countries in ASEAN. In Indonesia, the president appointed nine new competition commissioners and a new competition chief. Meanwhile, the Philippines’ antitrust agency raised the merger notification threshold, and also published a draft of guidelines for joint ventures. We get updates from lawyers in both countries.

FEATURE: LAW FIRM PRACTICE MANAGEMENT

Legal practice management software, which manages a law firm's case and client records, billing and bookkeeping, schedules and appointments, deadlines, computer files and more, is making giant strides globally. We look at the usage in Asia, and what brands are most popular.

FEATURE: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Contract-related artificial intelligence is today making waves among corporate law departments in the region. We look at how often it is being used, why in-house teams are making moves to use it, and what kinds of functions it will be used for.
