Antonia Serrano, Luis A. Natividad The endocannabinoid system plays an important role in regulating brain reward and affective states involved in substance misuse and relapse, among other behaviors. This ARCR review discusses the effects of alcohol consumption on brain endocannabinoids, the manipulation of endocannabinoid signaling to modulate alcohol-related effects, and the impacts of dysregulated endocannabinoid function in withdrawal-induced anxiety-like behaviors. The authors also describe technological advancements that are revealing compelling new information about the endocannabinoid system and its role in complex psychopathologies, including alcohol use disorder and addiction.
