Cindy B. Veldhuis, Noah T. Kreski, John Usseglio, and Katherine M. Keyes Stress is a strong predictor of problematic alcohol use, and the COVID-19 pandemic is often characterized as a perfect storm of several stressors. This ARCR review explores how pandemic-related stress has uniquely affected alcohol consumption and its consequences in cisgender women and transgender and nonbinary people as well as in understudied subgroups such as women of color, sexual minority women, and older women. The authors also explore the narrowing gender gap in alcohol consumption during the pandemic and suggest areas of future research to better understand the health and behavioral impacts of stressors in these underrepresented populations.
