ALEXEY LUTSENKO TAKES FIRST TOUR DE FRANCE WIN

Kazakhstan national champion Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) claimed a solo victory at Mont Aigoual, a spectacular and unprecedented stage finish in the southern Occitanie region. He collected his first ever Tour de France win four days before turning 28 thanks to a well-timed acceleration 4km before the summit of La Lusette with 17.5km to go. Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) came second and Greg Van Avermaet (CCC) third while Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) retained the yellow jersey.

Key figure of the day

Alexey Lutsenko, who won at the Mont Aigoual, offered his team Astana a 13th stage victory on the Tour de France. On non-TT stages, each and every Astana victory on the Tour came from an offensive behaviour of his riders. Some of them went on breakaways (Vinokourov in 2010, Nibali in 2015, Fraile and Cort Nielsen in 2018 and Lutsenko in 2020) and others happened through leaders who won alone in mountain stages (Contador in 2009, Nibali in 2014 and Aru in 2017). In 2014, Vincenzo Nibali even finished alone at Sheffield, at the end of a stage without mountains. Astana also won a TTT and an ITT with Contador in 2009.
