Your weekly digest of Toronto food news
Dear reader, Twenty-three restaurants woke up this morning with a little more swagger in their step—and a deluge of requests in their reservation systems. That’s because last night, Michelin, those tire-makers-slash-restaurant-reviewers, announced the newest additions to the Toronto guide. Four kitchens were granted one star each, another four were given Bib Gourmand status and the remaining spots were added to the list of recommended restaurants (so, like honourable mentions). The major difference between this new edition and its predecessors is that restaurants outside of Toronto now have the chance to earn the coveted distinction of being Michelin-starred. This year’s winners include establishments from the Niagara region and Hamilton, as well as Grey and Simcoe counties. Pearl Morissette earned a star—as it should have a couple of years ago but didn’t because of its location. Jordan Station, a small community within the town of Lincoln (population: approximately 25,000), didn’t have its own Michelin Guide at the time and, let’s face it, won’t have one anytime soon. This week’s newsletter includes a breakdown of all the winners. Also, a look at what’s on the menu at Overlea, the rooftop restaurant at Newmarket’s Postmark Hotel. Plus, a tour of Civil Works, the gorgeous new cocktail bar inside the Waterworks Food Hall. For more of our food-and-drink coverage, visit torontolife.com or subscribe to our print edition. |

Last night, four new restaurants were each awarded one Michelin star (bringing our city’s total of starred establishments to 16), but only one of them—DaNico, the swanky new Italian kitchen from the Don Alfonso team—is actually in Toronto. Click here to see all the winners. |

| After almost a decade of making delicious boozy drinks at their Bloorcourt cocktail bar, Civil Liberties has expanded, opening Civil Works, a massive new location on the mezzanine of Waterworks Food Hall. There’s a short selection of small plates, a long list of house cocktails and the nerdiest water dispensing system this city has ever seen. |
