Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is one of the few people famous enough to be recognized by her first name, just like the two people she interviewed last night, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex and her husband, Prince Harry

The topics covered during the two-hour CBS special Oprah and the Royals ranged from lighthearted anecdotes about Markle having to learn to curtsy right before meeting Queen Elizabeth for the first time and how they actually were married in a private ceremony with the Archbishop of Canterbury three days before the televised extravaganza the world watched, to far more serious discussions about Markle's struggle with suicidal thoughts and their distress over conversations that unnamed members of the royal family had while Markle was pregnant with Archie about "how dark his skin might be."

The couple took the time to clear up several misperceptions about their exit from their roles as senior royals. Harry spoke at length about his strained relationships with his father, Prince Charles, and brother, Prince William, but also about his compassion for them and sincere belief that they would eventually be able to mend fences.

And we also found out if Archie is getting a little brother or little sister.

Winfrey asked in-depth questions that led to some major, even shocking, revelations. The interview raked in blockbuster ratings for CBS Sunday night, and is expected to do so again on Monday when it airs on British television.

Early information from Nielsen looks like the interview was a major ratings win for CBS. A total of 17.1 million viewers tuned in to watch on Sunday, including 2.6 million adults age 18-49, and 3.6 million adults age 25-54.

That’s the largest prime time audience for any entertainment special since the 2020 Academy Awards, according to CBS, and the most-watched Sunday prime time event, on any network, in over a year, outside of the Super Bowl.

And it was a pop culture moment that is already being compared to the late Princess Diana's interview with Martin Bashir. A win for Winfrey, for sure.

MEDIA LOSER:
John Catsimatidis,
WABC Radio Owner

“He is dynamic on-the-air, entertaining, and will bring listeners what they want to hear in a style that is uniquely his own. Greg is a terrific addition to our daytime radio programming, and will bring along with him a loyal audience who appreciates his perspective on the political current events.”

That comment (via Page Six) comes from WABC radio owner John Catsimatidis about Newsmax host Greg Kelly — who, starting Tuesday, will be hosting an afternoon show on the New York political talk station. And every word of it might well be true. But that doesn't make Kelly's hire by Catsimatidis any less disgraceful.

Kelly is a deranged conspiracy theorist who, for months, has been one of the most shameless promoters of the Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump. Night after night, Kelly floated theories about the vote being compromised in a variety of ways, without so much as a shred of evidence.

As such, it is manifestly irresponsible to put him on the air. And yet that is precisely Catsamitidis is going to do. Catsimatidis, pictured above with Kelly's father, former NYC police commissioner Ray Kelly, is a New York City businessman who has launched a longshot bid for mayor as a Republican (and considering doing the same for governor) and has embraced Trumpian politics in recent years. In fact, he's gone so far as to platform the former president's attorney, Rudy Giuliani, giving him a daily WABC show as well.

In some ways, bringing Kelly into the fold appears even worse. At least with Giuliani, it is abundantly clear where he stands. To give Kelly a veneer of credibility, though, is absurd. His commentary does not justify it.  Worse yet for Catsimatidis, if Kelly's recent Newsmax trends are any indication, the move may not even reap ratings benefits.

But whether the audience for the show is a hundred or a million, a responsible broadcaster simply would not put Greg Kelly on the air. Over the weekend, John Catsimatidis made it clear he is not that.

Jason Miller, senior adviser to President Donald Trump, is the latest guest on The Interview podcast.

He discussed CPAC, the 2020 election, Trump's plan to exact revenge on Republican opponents, whether he still watches Fox News, and his plans to return to social media.

The A-Block

Megxit Mania

The fallout from Meghan and Harry's blockbuster interview with Oprah Winfrey continued into Monday morning, with multiple related topics trending on Twitter and clips from the interview being prominently played across news and talk shows.

Regarding the shocking allegations that an unnamed member of the royal family had worried about how dark baby Archie's skin would be, Winfrey clarified the story in a Monday morning interview with her longtime friend Gayle King on CBS This Morning, saying that Harry had wanted to make it clear that it was not his grandparents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip.

Piers Morgan had an absolute meltdown this morning reacting to Meghan and Harry's comments, slamming the couple for what he called "absolutely outrageous" lies and their "complete and utter betrayal," and even getting in quite the skirmish with one of his own guests.

Unsurprisingly, the British papers went a bit bonkers.

Even White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki found herself asked about the interview. She praised their "courage."

It's a simple question

Progressive media watchdogs have, for months, called on Sunday talk show hosts to ask Republicans on their programs to acknowledge that Joe Biden legitimately won the 2020 election. This weekend, one of those hosts did — but his interviewee was more than a little hesitant to acknowledge Biden's victory.

In a tense exchange on CNN's State of the Union Sunday, Jake Tapper tried to get Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) to make the admission. But Reeves was reluctant. "Do you accept that Joe Biden is the legitimate, lawfully-elected President of the United States?"

Reeves replied by saying, “President Biden is the president of the United States,” and going off on a tangent about mail-in voting.

Tapper was unsatisfied by the response. “Yes or no, do you accept that the 2020 presidential election was free and fair?” Tapper asked. “Obviously, every election has some questions, but I’m talking about free and fair legitimately-elected Joe Biden. Yes or no?”

The reply from Reeves punctuated a terse back-and-forth.
