| Greetings from your Almanac editors, and welcome to “Debut Day” for The 2021 Old Farmer’s Almanac! This year marks the 229th edition since the publication of the first edition of The Old Farmer's Almanac in 1792 during George Washington's presidency. Thanks to you and generations of readers, we've never stopped printing and The Old Farmer's Almanac is now the oldest still-published almanac and the best-selling annual periodical in North America! We thank you for your trust. Join us in celebrating the book release of the 2021 Almanac! As of this morning, Tuesday, August 18, you'll start seeing the 2021 edition rolling out in stores. From Tractor Supply to Lowe's, here's a list of places where you can find the Almanacs. If the store hasn't put out the copies yet, just ask for the little yellow book! And if you'd like a copy shipped straight to your house, The 2021 Old Farmer's Almanac is available in paperback and hardcover (and Kindle) on Amazon.com. May this year’s Old Farmer’s Almanac bring a lift, a smile, and a great start to the year (a few months early!). Now, without further ado, let’s introduce The 2021 Old Farmer’s Almanac. | THE 2021 ALMANAC: A GUARANTEE OF SOMETHING GOOD This 229th edition aims once again to fulfill your expectations by being the same (the facts, the fun, the forecasts!) but also different (news, novelties, and a little nonsense) from page to page—a compendium of curiosities to carry you throughout the year. We’ll start with what many folks want to know: the weather | THE 2020-2021 WEATHER FORECAST In the U.S., we are calling for a warmer-than-normal winter throughout the majority of the nation, with uncommonly chilly temperatures limited mostly to the western states and Maine. “Wet” will be a wintertime constant, with rains or average to below-average snowfall throughout most of the country. Significant above-average snowfall is being predicted for Wisconsin and parts of Michigan and Alaska, as well as for the High Plains and northeastern states. In Canada, we are calling for frigid and frosty temperatures throughout most of the country. The exception will be in Atlantic Canada and the Prairies, which may feel some relief from winter’s chill but—like the rest of the country—will see lots of rain, snow, and sleet. Areas from Alberta eastward to Quebec should brace for a virtually continual “Snow Train” that will be carrying a series of winter storms throughout the season. See the 2020-2021 Winter Weather Forecast Summery—and map! The Old Farmer’s Almanac is, of course, so much more than just the weather . . . | | A CALENDAR OF THE HEAVENS As longtime readers know, our traditionally 80 percent–accurate weather predictions are a small part of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Sky watchers count on our 100 percent–accurate astronomical predictions, with guidance on when and where to look up for celestial events. Once again, the Almanac provides monthly calendars of the year’s astronomical events, including everything from Moon phases to meteor showers, from planetary conjunctions to the length of days, and from star transits to twilight times—and more! | A CALENDAR OF EVENTS Planning takes time, and time is the Almanac’s stock-in-trade! Whether you’re going to pickle, paint, party, wean babies or animals, quit smoking or go fishing, feast or fast, set seeds or pull weeds, get married at high tide or set eggs to hatch chicks, you need to know when. And the 2021 Almanac can tell you, with . . . Calendar pages covering civic, religious, and traditional holidays; historic trivia, tides, and folklore for every day of the year; plus a farmer’s monthly timely reflection on country living. Planting tables based on the Moon, plus handy frost charts (so that seedlings are set out at the right time). A chart of the “Best Days” to do more than 40 common activities, from dieting to cutting hair, from washing windows to moving—even for brewing beer! | A REFERENCE BOOK The Almanac is the one book that you can read all year, again and again, because it has information and advice that you can use—or be amused by—every day: Cooking advice and recipes DIY health remedies: pain relievers that can ease sore muscles, joints, and throats A table of measures with standard and metric conversions Quirky facts, profound proverbs, contests, “Mind-Mangler” brainteasers, and humorous “pleasantries” to tickle your funny bone Look inside! Take a peek at the pages of the 2021 edition! | | WHAT’S NEW IN 2021? Live better, do more with less, and stay healthy! That’s the direction for the year 2021! Consider: As people from all walks of life embrace the practicalities of growing their own food, the Almanac shows readers how easy it is to grow practically anything, almost anywhere. Who hasn’t had their mood instantly brightened by a puppy or kitten? Taking care of one is a completely different story. As more households add a furry, feathered, or finned friend to the family, the Almanac helps to match the care needs of each kind of pet to the busy lifestyles of prospective owners. From sea to shining sea: Since 1880, sea levels have risen 6.5 inches—and nearly half of this has been since 1950. This rise is unevenly distributed, but it’s happening almost everywhere and the problem is accelerating. See why sea level rise impacts everyone—even those who live far from a coast—through this strictly scientific look by the Almanac. The best advice for staying healthy has remained the same for generations—eat a healthy diet, don’t skimp on sleep, stay home when sick, and avoid contact with public surfaces. The 2021 Old Farmer’s Almanac digs deeper into the tried-and-true and also offers folklore advice that’s a bit less common but—according to some—no less effective! For anyone who has ever thought about trading in their modern life for rural simplicity, The 2021 Old Farmer’s Almanac shares the stories of farmers who work their dreams while making a difference, include a farm that runs completely on solar power and the teacher who turned 12 acres of hardscrabble land into a working farm that is changing the community. All of this, plus … food, garden, financial, and lifestyle trends for 2021 love lessons from old Valentines the fascinating world of migrating birds the ups and downs of competitive stone-skipping do-it-yourself weather forecasting an unconventional method of chimney-sweeping award-winning appetizer recipes … and many, many more articles and bits of valuable advice that continue The Old Farmer’s Almanac’s time-honored tradition of being “useful, with a pleasant degree of humor.” | PICK UP YOUR COPY We love independent bookstores, so we encourage our readers to support their bookstores and local shops.
