🎃 The Business of Halloween Is Getting Spookier |
Want to save money in August and September? Be wary of all the commercial trappings of Halloween, which keep moving earlier in the calendar year. |
Halloween is having a moment. Gen Z is buying giant skeletons from big-box retail stores in late summer and throwing “Summerween” parties. |
The renewed early obsession with Halloween in recent years isn’t limited to the youngest generations. Case in point: Starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte. |
Starbucks recently poached Chipotle’s CEO in an attempt to tackle several headwinds that have plagued the company. It also played another ace in the hole, debuting the pumpkin spice latte Aug. 22 – the earliest date ever. |
The beverage debuted in 2003. It now makes up 10% of store sales while the limited-edition “fall” treat remains available. |
According to Sherwood, “These limited edition products often translate to big mark-ups for brands: one 2022 survey found that a ‘pumpkin spice tax’ on seasonally flavored items can see the costs of these products increase by up to 161% at grocery stores.” |
Target, Home Depot and Target are just a few of the retailers who begin selling what USA Today described as “monstrous animatronic decorations” in July. |
“Halloween has become a monster holiday, with consumer spending hitting records each of the last three years -- $12.2 billion in 2023,” the USA Today story noted. |
