OVERSIGHT: Ten years after then-Mayor Mitch Landrieu signed up for federal oversight of an infamously corrupt New Orleans Police Department, the agency’s consent decree is facing its stiffest test yet.
OCHSNER’S GROWTH: Warner Thomas will leave a legacy of unprecedented growth in Louisiana when the Ochsner Health CEO departs this fall. Ochsner’s footprint swelled during his tenure, from eight hospitals and 38 clinics to 48 hospitals and more than 300 clinics, in just 10 years. With Thomas moving on Nov. 1, it’s unclear whether Ochsner will continue acquiring partnerships, affiliates and hospitals at such a rapid clip.
THE FORGOTTEN CITY: Since Hurricane Laura struck in August 2020, Lake Charles has served as a spotlight the shortcomings in the U.S. system for helping communities rebuild from catastrophe. The process of distributing key components of long-term aid — meant to help not in the first frantic days after a storm but to rebuild housing and infrastructure — is unpredictable, often caught up in battles over federal spending. As a result, the country essentially forgot one of its cities.
