| | | | | | | | | | The fallout following U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to the region last week has vacillated between optimism and pessimism. On one hand, hope that Trump's priorities (and his cold shoulder) could push Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the war in Gaza, lead to normalization with Saudi Arabia and perhaps even with Syria's new government. Pessimism because, well, the massive new offensive in Gaza, Gideon's Chariots, continues.
While perhaps some aspects of Trump's actions in the region could potentially lead to a positive outcome, the data is clear that American Jews understand the danger he poses to democracy and to their safety.
In the meantime, the large Jewish establishment organizations in the U.S. remain starkly silent. Indeed, the big picture of Israel's actions in Gaza is being underestimated by many, including by Israelis. And yet the political implications of the war are far reaching even in a world foreign to many of us (myself included): athletics. | | |
