Each year, the charity world waits eagerly for the announcement of how much individual Americans gave to charity. While the annual total dollar amount has climbed every year, the actual number of Americans giving has decreased over time.

This means that charities are relying more and more on big-gift donors, an issue that has become more prominent as the American middle-class continues to shrink. And while big gifts are often applauded, there is much to be said for the small donor who contributes on a regular basis.
