Yesterday we mentioned that Miles College had signed a letter-of-intent to negotiate a purchase of Birmingham-Southern College, and it had people wondering what happened to Alabama A&M's interest in the campus. Well, Alabama A&M Vice President of Government Relations and External Affairs Shannon Reeves said the school has already made a $65.5 million second offer on the property, reports AL.com's Roy S. Johnson. That's $13.5 million more than a first offer that A&M made on May 1. Reeves said A&M is committed to "maintain the entire BSC property as an academic facility focused solely on higher education.” |

Let's move from tens of millions to hundreds of millions. The University of Alabama Board of Trustees approved a $450 million plan for UAB Health System to acquire Ascension St. Vincent's this fall, reports AL.com's Amy Yurkanin. Ascension St. Vincent's includes the main St. Vincent's in downtown Birmingham, St. Vincent's East, St. Vincent's St. Clair, St. Vincent's Blount and St. Vincent's Chilton. UAB is also taking over doctor's offices, a stand-alone ER in Trussville, the One Nineteen campus in Birmingham, and imaging centers. A UAB spokesperson said the system wants to keep most or all providers and make the change seamless for the patients. UAB Health System CEO Dawn Bulgarella said UAB expects to make infrastructure investments in the facilities. |

The Alabama Democratic Party chairman isn't pleased with how the Biden-Harris campaign narrowed down Alabama's delegate candidates to one for each race, reports AL.com's Mike Cason. Delegate races were on the March primary ballots. Presidential candidates can review the delegate candidates, and state party chair Randy Kelley said the Biden folks simply selected one candidate for each of the 34 district delegate races. Kelley and longtime party leader Joe Reed said that unfairly turned back people who've worked hard for the party for years. The Democrats don't want to discourage people who are involved. Kelley said he sent a letter to Biden on the issue. |
The New York Times recently published its list of "22 of the Best Pizza Places in the United States." Note the hedge there. Their headline wasn't "The 22 best" but "22 of the best." That could be a New York Times effort to not get its food writers run out of town on a rail when an Alabama pizza joint makes the cut ... but we don't know that. Don't mess with New Yorkers and their pizza. AL.com's Bob Carlton reports that Post Office Pies in Mountain Brook made the Times list. Post Office Pies was originally in Birmingham's Avondale neighborhood but opened the Mountain Brook location in 2020 and closed the Birmingham spot earlier this year. The article did reference owner John Hall's experience in prestigious New York restaurants, bolstering the case for the local folks up there. From the Times story: “The Neapolitan pies are expertly made, often highlighting local produce; one draws on the partner Brandon Cain’s experience with Southern barbecue."
