This Halloween, we will experience a second full Moon during a single month, which makes it a “Blue Moon.” The October 31 full Moon is also known as a Hunter’s Moon, as this is the traditional time of year to build up stores for the long winter ahead. (October’s first full Moon, on the 1st, was a so-called “Harvest Moon” because it was the full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox on September 22.)
While Blue Moons are rare-ish (they happen every few years), this one is particularly special because of its spook-tacular connections. Full Moons—and the ghosts, ghouls, and werewolves that go along with them—might be haunted holiday staples, but just how unusual is it for a full Moon to fall on Halloween? As it turns out … very! A full Moon on Halloween occurs only about every 18 or so years. Add that it’s also a Blue Moon, and this is clearly a very special lunar event!
As if the appearance of a Hunter’s Blue Moon on Halloween wasn’t enough reason to skygaze, be sure to look for the reappearance the glorious Seven Sisters—that is, the Pleiades, a tightly packed cluster of sparkling stars named for the seven daughters of Titan Atlas in Greek mythology.
