This Week in Nursing According to a report released by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), healthcare facilities in the U.S. have showed “remarkable progress” in transgender-specific patient policies, transgender-inclusive benefits for employees, and LGBTQ-patient-care training for staff. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sounded the alarm this week after it found that "nightmare bacteria" capable of resisting most antibiotics have popped up across the country. But CDC also expressed optimism that "an aggressive approach can snuff them out" before those germs become widespread. In just two years, the facility cut its hospital-acquired infection rate by 90% and saved itself $498,000. How did the facility make such tremendous strides in infection control? Short answer: daily interdisciplinary safety huddles. Solutions Spotlight Patient falls are a fixture in The Joint Commission’s list of top 10 sentinel events; in fact, they were the third highest sentinel event reported to the accreditor in 2016. Causes of falls can include inadequate assessments, side effects from medications or diseases, and environmental hazards, as well as a lack of leadership or staff orientation.
During this three-hour virtual workshop, Carole Eldridge, DNP, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, and Virginia Hall, DNP, MSN/Ed. RN, CNE, will provide a step-by-step guide to setting up a successful and sustainable evidence-based multidisciplinary fall prevention program in your facility.
