An oddly busy Friday for the Saints

Hello and welcome to the Saturday, April 13 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. Let's take a second to interrupt our pre-draft coverage to recap what was oddly a busy Friday for the Saints in the free agency department.

What's supposed to be a quiet period turned out to be an active day for the Saints, who signed two free agents and reached an agreement with another. First, New Orleans signed quarterback Kellen Mond. Then, the team added wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown. And they capped the day by agreeing to bring back cornerback Shermar Jean-Charles, who spent part of last season with the Saints.

On the surface, none of the three moves are earth-shattering. But they still could be important depth pieces for the Saints as they plan for next season.

How the signings affect Saints' draft plans

Look, reader, I'll be honest with you. Signing Equanimeous St. Brown isn't going to prevent the Saints from drafting a wide receiver, if one is on the board they feel comfortable taking come draft night. But we still discussed that topic and more on the latest edition of the Saints Insider podcast.

Among the reasons to actually listen: We debated whether the Saints should trade back in the first round, something they haven't done since 1997. Michael Jordan was still on the Chicago Bulls then. (It was a good discussion.)

Prospects galore

By now, you know the Saints need an offensive tackle. Our Luke Johnson has a detailed breakdown on which of them best fit the Saints, who have a very specific taste in offensive linemen.

If you're tired of reading about tackles, I wrote about LSU wide receiver Brian Thomas and how he could potentially be what the Saints need at the position.

Morestead chats

In non-draft, non-free agency news, our Jeff Duncan caught up with former Saints punter Thomas Morstead the other day. It was a fun article and Morstead admitted he's allowed himself to imagine what it would be like to play in New Orleans again for next year's Super Bowl ... as a member of the New York Jets, of course.

"It would be too sweet," he said.

Anyway, that should do it for now. Have a good weekend and enjoy French Quarter Fest if you're headed that way. Thanks for reading.

Take care,

Matthew Paras
