An orchestral forest, fairy tale theatre, and a film iconMet Leicester Square's newest resident yet?
From the Sunken Place to Leicester SquareWhat do Mary Poppins, Bugs Bunny and Daniel Kaluuya have in common? They’ve all been honoured with a statue in Leicester Square! The latest addition to the interactive, cinematically-inspired Scenes in the Square trail depicts actor (and born-and-bred Londoner) Daniel Kaluuya in his breakout role in Jordan Peele’s Oscar®-winning, box office record-smashing psychological horror, Get Out. The statue immortalises the moment Kaluuya’s character recedes into the metaphysical abyss of the “Sunken Place” — an allegory for the marginalisation of Black people and Black voices that has endured in pop culture. Kaluuya was chosen in a poll of 5,000 British film fans conducted by Show Film First, as the British cinema star people most wanted to see added to the trail. And it’s easy to see why: the actor was beloved for his appearances in homegrown TV shows such as Skins — hands up all Posh Kenneth fans! — and Black Mirror, before taking Hollywood by storm with the likes of Black Panther, and an Oscar®-winning turn in Judas and the Black Messiah. Want to see the statue for yourself? The whole trail is free to visit — just head to Leicester Square and explore at your leisure.
