“She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” — Mark 14:8-9
This passage depicts Jesus honoring an act of generosity that many would label as foolish. In fact, the bystanders who witnessed the woman pouring out her expensive perfume upon Jesus’ body did exactly that. They accused the woman of wastefulness. But Jesus silenced them by saying that she had done a beautiful thing.
In a recent CT article, Hannah Weidman writes about the ways that God is teaching her to be generous even when her flesh, or the outside world, says to withhold.
“God, in his kindness, both invites me to give generously and empowers me by his Spirit to do so,” she explains. “I’ve come to realize that in teaching me to give things away he’s healing the part of me that still believes there won’t be enough.”
As Easter draws close, we are given the opportunity to consider the radical generosity of Christ’s sacrifice. In doing so, may we find ourselves compelled to worship in selfless ways—even ways that others may consider foolish—ever reminded of the abundance of our Savior.
