Anatomy of a meltdown: A blow-by-blow analysis of the Saints' epic collapse

Good morning, and welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022.

"It sucks, it stings, it hurts."

That was how Saints head coach Dennis Allen described the Saints' stunning loss to the Bucs on Monday. He might as well have been speaking for Saints fans everywhere. Hopefully, the sting has worn off for everyone by now.

Everything that could go wrong did go wrong for the Saints down the stretch and it resulted in one of their most gut-wrenching losses in recent memory.

I spent most of Tuesday morning, analyzing the tape of the game and compiling a blow-by-blow analysis of what went wrong down the stretch for out weekly Saints re-watch file, appropriately headlined: "Anatomy of a Meltdown."

Yes, the Mark Ingram play looked just as bad the second time around. But it was far from the only mistake the Saints made. As Sean Payton used to say, there were a lot of dirty hands in this one.

Speaking of Ingram, he issued a public apology for his mistake on his social media platforms late Monday night. "I'm sick about this one," Ingram said. Luke Johnson has the story.

As usual, beat reporter Terrin Waack checks in with "Marching On," her weekly postgame smorgasbord of stats, quotes and notes from the Saints game. I always learn something from this file, and you will, too, when you read it.

There was some news on Tuesday: Linebacker Demario Davis was named the Saints' 2022 Man of the Year. It's the second time Davis has been nominated by the club for the NFL's most prestigious off-field honor, Luke Johnson reports.

That's it for today. The Saints have an open date on the schedule this week, so the players and coaches are off. That said, we'll still have plenty of coverage throughout the week so keep it plugged into NOLA.com.

Until next time,

Jeff Duncan
