Tony Finau can’t lose these days

Not that Tony Finau needs any more of a boost, but he's actually won three times this summer. As the world watched him cruise to consecutive victories the past two weeks on the PGA Tour—the 3M Open in Blaine, Minn., followed by the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit—our editorial staff also witnessed his climb up a secret and rarer leaderboard, and now we're making it public. After tallying the votes, Finau has topped the 2022 Golf Digest Tour Nice Guys Ranking, joining past winners Steve Stricker (2013), Jordan Spieth (2017) and Rickie Fowler (2019). To compile this year's ranking of the nicest 30, Senior Writer Joel Beall oversaw the interviewing and surveying of more than 120 current pros, caddies, media members, golf executives, locker-room attendants and tournament volunteers. Although "nice" is hard to define, particularly in pro golf's heated moment where terms like ethics, greed and human rights are new hazards, Beall writes, "if you're looking for a through line on the players [who made our list], it is this: the inclination and consistency of treating people—no matter their station–with respect and civility".

I sat down with Finau to inform him of this honor and to interview him about his upbringing, his philosophy of being, his thoughts on the LIV Tour, what other pros could do to be nicer, and more. We even got into school shootings, Mormonism and Buddhism. If I left the interview certain of one thing, it's that we didn't make a mistake picking the wrong player. Nice guys do finish first.

Best,

Max Adler, Editorial Director
