The National Media Awards Foundation is thrilled to reveal the finalists of the 45th annual National Magazine Awards. Our incredible roster of more than 100 volunteer judges dedicated countless hours to evaluating entries from hundreds of magazines across the country. From their careful consideration of more than 1,000 entries, we are pleased to present this list of 199 impressive finalists.

On June 3rd, 2022 at 7PM ET, the winners will be revealed during a virtual ceremony hosted by award-winning journalist, Kelly Boutsalis. Gold winners in writing and visual categories will receive a $1,000 cash prize. Please join us in congratulating these incredible finalists!

Michael Friscolanti’s “Every 49 Minutes,” published in Maclean’s, has two nominations — Investigative Reporting and Long-Form Feature Writing 6000+.

“Citizen of Nowhere,” written by Adnan Khan for The Walrus, is nominated twice, in Long-Form Feature Writing and Profiles.

“Doctor Fentanyl,” written by Brett Popplewell for Toronto Life, is nominated twice, in Long-Form Feature Writing and Investigative Reporting.

The Walrus’ “Justice on Trial,” is nominated twice — for Eva Holland in Long-Form Feature Writing and Lauren Crazybull in Illustration.

“Kids in Crisis,” published by Broadview, has received nominations for Miranda Newman in Feature Writing and Cornelia Li in Illustration.

Hazlitt’s “Molar City” is nominated in Personal Journalism for Tom Thor Buchanan and Illustration for Hudson Christie.

Stephanie Bai’s “Seeking Sanctuary,” published in Maisonneuve, has earned nominations for Long-Form Feature Writing and Best Emerging Writer.

Sabrina Myre is nominated in Feature Writing for “Les femmes au front pour traquer les pédophiles sur Internet” and Short Feature Writing for “Des femmes chassent le plastique pour sauver la planète,” both published in ELLE Québec.

For “What Happened at Northwood?,” published in The Coast, Stephanie Nolen is nominated in Long-Form Feature Writing 6000+ and Investigative Reporting.

Magazine Grand Prix honours the magazine that delivers the best consistency, packaging and reader experience; that demonstrates overall excellence in bringing teams together to create a spectacular product; is aspirational and inspiring, helping to take magazine media to the next level. The title of Magazine Grand Prix will be given to one publication among the four winners of the Best Magazine awards and presented at the upcoming winners’ celebration in June.

After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to once again postpone awarding the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement. All applications for these awards from 2020 and 2021 will be kept on file for consideration, and we look forward to celebrating the winners at next year’s awards.
