The work of Andreas Gefeller inherits the quiet poetry of intense observation. The consideration of a rapidly changing outside world serves as the starting point for his new series "The Backside of Light".
By revealing underlying structures of superficial appearances, Gefeller sheds light on existential questions and pursues his own fascination for creation. With a sensitive grasp he explores the cosmic dimension of everyday occurrences. | | | | | | Andreas Gefeller 023-1, 2018 Inkjetprint, 60 x 45 cm Courtesy Thomas Rehbein Galerie, VG Bild-Kunst 2018 | | | | The lack of reference points and a high depth of focus deprive the photographs of its proportions. Floating in space, the structures reveal little about their actual materiality and their origin in nature. Delicate and translucent like a single cell under a light microscope, they become vague, abstract ideas of themselves.
"Ones and zeros, networks, data, interfaces, synapses, links, codes, matrix. I search for the digital in the analogue, for technical structures in nature, and visualize connections that are visually incomprehensible. I create illustrations of a mechanized evolution that may one day no longer be human, and look to the other side of the visible, the backside of light."
