The body of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch has been recovered from the Bayesian yacht off the coast of Sicily, a source close to the family says. Five bodies have been recovered from the wreck of the boat, with one person still missing. Investigators have started to look into the circumstances of the tragedy, with many questions still unanswered. 

Was the keel up? And if so, why?

It's one of the key questions facing investigators. A keel is a large, fin-like part of the boat that protrudes from its base. Its bottom contains a huge weight to keep the boat stable. On vessels this big, keels are often designed to be retracted so it can dock in shallower areas - but the Bayesian was found at a depth of 50m (164ft), which suggests there was no reason that the keel needed to be retracted. Investigators will want to know whether the keel was “up, down or somewhere halfway,” says Jean-Baptiste Souppez, fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects

Could the crew have had foreseen the storm?

Captain James Catfield reportedly told Italian media that he couldn't have foreseen the storm. We do know that bad weather had been forecast beforehand, but the waterspout witnesses have described seeing is something else entirely. Waterspouts are similar to tornadoes, but form over water rather than land. And they are not something that the crew could have predicted.

What more do we know about the waterspouts?

According to the International Centre for Waterspout Research, there were 18 confirmed waterspouts off the coast of Italy on 19 August alone. But the chance of one striking a ship directly - as has been speculated here - is still very low. “The bottom line will be that even if there have been issues with keel or hatches being open, you are probably still looking at a freak weather accident,” says Mr Souppez.
