Good morning, or rather: ¡Dios mío! Yet another botched art restoration in Spain, this time in the northeastern city of Soria, has cultural heritage advocates wondering what went wrong after the beloved cherubim of an 18th-century church received a rather startling makeover. Our new Staff Reporter, Isa Farfan, has the story.

Over the next week, we’ll be sharing Editor-in-Chief Hrag Vartanian’s in-depth conversations with Hyperallergic’s 2024 Emily Hall Tremaine Journalism Fellows, starting today with Chicana artist, curator, and death doula Brianna L. Hernández. The talk is a great opportunity to revisit Hernández’s moving exhibitions and essays on art and end-of-life traditions.

More below, including Lise Ragbir’s recommendations for institutions looking to become more equitable and our monthly art crossword. (Took me 12 minutes — how about you?)
