Using lyrics without permission has not caused any “irreparable harm” to music publishers says Anthropic in injunction dispute

Anthropic has asked a US court to deny a request made by a group of music publishers who want an injunction to force the AI company to stop its chatbot Claude from spitting out their lyrics and to ensure that their songs are not used in any future AI training.

In a legal filing earlier this month, the music companies claimed that Anthropric has “already usurped publishers’ and songwriters’ control over the use of their works, denied them credit, and jeopardised their reputations”. If Anthropic is allowed to continue using lyrics, said the publishers, the “wanton copying” would “irreversibly damage the licensing market for lyrics, publishers’ relationships with licensees, and publishers’ goodwill with the songwriters they represent”. 

While the broader lawsuit filed by the publishers is going through the courts, they want a judge to force an immediate stop to what they see as copyright infringement by Anthropic: both the use of their lyrics in the AI company’s training datasets and the alleged outputting of their lyrics by Claude.

Warner Chappell is “hindering” Shaboozey’s efforts to buy himself out of his deal, alleges lawsuit

Country artist Shaboozey has sued Warner Chappell accusing the music publisher of blocking his attempts to fast-track his exit from an administration deal with the company by refusing to tell him how much of his advances remain unrecouped. 

By failing to provide him with that information, he says, Warner Chappell is hindering his efforts to buy himself out of the deal. However, it seems that the dispute is really with his former label Kreshendo Entertainment, which has filed its own lawsuit.  

Having co-written two tracks on Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ album, it’s no surprise that Shaboozey - real name Collins Chibueze - is looking to negotiate a new deal around his song rights. His own most recent track ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ has also been a global success, racking up more than 654 million plays on Spotify, another 105 million on YouTube, as well as tens of millions of views driven by use in short form video on TikTok and Instagram, with three quarters of a million clips using the track across those two platforms alone. 

🎧 Approved: Tara Lily

South Londoner and British Bengali musician Tara Lily has an eclectic sound that transcends jazz, electronica, trip-hop and alternative R&B, all while weaving in Indian soundscapes to create something uniquely her own. A classically trained jazz musician from Trinity Laban Conservatoire Of Music, Lily’s deep understanding of diverse genres and the cultures they come from shines through in her work.

Her latest single, ‘Breathe Now’, is a jazz-infused dnb track, built around a classic 90s jungle sample with trumpets, keys and vocals layered to form a trippy soundscape. Accompanied by a mixed-media visualiser by Central Saint Martins artist and graphic designer Ace Rahman, the song encourages getting out of the mind and into the body, inspired by Lily’s work with SHAKTI energy (divine female lifeforce).

The track leads her debut album ‘Speak In The Dark’, which is set for release on 27 Sep. Lily describes the album as a reflection of her experience with ADHD, saying, "I was diagnosed with ADHD at fifteen when I was expelled from school. I often feel like every day is an emotional rollercoaster. This album is a representation of that. It’s a journey of high-energy, intense songs and deep, slow, mournful ballads".
