Biden's Chief of Staff Says Response to Hack Will Go Beyond Sanctions The incoming White House chief of staff for Joe Biden said on Sunday that the next administration's response to a recently discovered cyberattack that targeted several government agencies will be more than "just sanctions."
"In terms of the measures that a Biden administration would take in response to an attack like this -- I want to be very clear -- it's not just sanctions," Ron Klain told CBS. "It's also steps and things we could do to degrade the capacity of foreign actors to repeat this sort of attack." By Dave DeCamp Read the full story >
US Closing Last Two Consulates in Russia
The Trump administration informed Congress of its plans to close the last two US consulates in Russia, leaving the US embassy in Moscow as the only US diplomatic mission in the country.
The State Department sent a letter to congressional leaders on December 10th that said the US is permanently closing its consulate in Vladivostok, and temporarily halting operations at the consulate in Yekaterinburg.
According to the letter, the US is shuttering the consulates due to caps set by Moscow on the number of diplomats allowed in the country. In 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin set new limits on the number of US diplomatic employees in response to US sanctions. By Dave DeCamp
Investigative Reporting Details Massacres, Reign of Terror by US-Backed Death Squads in Afghanistan
An extraordinary investigation by Australian journalist Andrew Quilty published Friday by The Intercept reveals U.S.-backed Afghan government paramilitary death squads have been waging a campaign of terror targeting civilians -- including children -- in Wardak province as part of the American military occupation of the nation that began nearly two decades ago. By Brett Wilkins Israel: Shopping for Friends in the Middle East The assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, was in the words of former CIA director, John Brennan, an "act of state-sponsored terrorism and a flagrant violation of international law." This is one of many such acts carried out by Mossad, Israel's national intelligence agency. It is yet another example of Israel's malign behavior in the Middle East since its establishment in Palestine in the early 1900s.. By M. Reza Behnam US Goes to Economic War Against NATO Ally Turkey: Time for a Civil Divorce? The Turkish-American marriage, solemnized by Ankara's accession to NATO in 1952, is on the rocks. The partners were ill-matched from the beginning but stayed together so long as the Soviet threat loomed and the Turkish military was in charge.
The Evil Empire, as Ronald Reagan characterized it, disappeared more than three decades ago. Nearly two decades of rule by Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) have transformed Turkey. In Abraham Lincoln's enduring words, the resulting "passion" has strained the "bonds of affection" between the two nations to the breaking point and perhaps beyond. The incoming Biden administration should stop treating Ankara as an ally and instead recognize it as the independent and often hostile power that it has become. By Doug Bandow No, Joe, Don't Roll Out the Red Carpet for Torture Enablers It was painful enough to live through the U.S invasion of Iraq that caused untold devastation and human misery for no justifiable reason.
Now we are again reminded of the grim Bush legacy with President-elect Biden's nomination of Avril Haines for Director of National Intelligence. Haines, who has an inside-the-beltway reputation for being nice and soft spoken, was a little too nice to CIA agents who hacked the computers of Senate Intelligence Committee investigators looking into the CIA use of "torture, waterboarding, sleep deprivation, hypothermia, rectal feeding, whippings, sexual humiliation " at prisons in Guantanamo and Afghanistan during the Bush War on Terror.
