More than 60 per cent of Canberrans had elected to stay under federal rule on this day in 1978. The referendum on self-government saw about 130,500 people hit polls across the territory. About 60 per cent voted for "no change" to the then-system of government; about 30 per cent voted in favour of a shift to state-like self-government, and fewer than 6 per cent preferred a proposal for a municipal government.
