Revisiting the Tae Bo Workouts of My Youth

The brainchild of Billy Blanks, an actor-turned-taekwondo practitioner, Tae Bo is a combination of basic kickboxing and dancing. When our correspondent Lauren Vionpal recently revisited the Tae Bo workouts of her youth, she found them to be so much more.

The standard “Tae Bo Workout” is good for training fundamentals and form, and the “Celebrity Fit Workout” features Blanks in a pretty iconic pair orange pleated shorts. But “Tae Bo: Advanced” immediately brought her back to her living room in the late 1990s, right down to the FBI warning at the beginning about not duplicating the video.

If you can get past the cheesiness and meandering music that sounds like a jam band playing endless elevator jazz, the Tae Bo Workout itself holds up.

Review: Mount Gay Embraces a Unique Distillation

What we’re drinking: Mount Gay Master Blender Collection: The Coffey Still Expression

Where it’s from: Mount Gay, located on the northernmost tip of Barbados, is the world’s oldest commercial rum distillery. Founded in 1703, the brand is now under the Rémy Cointreau drinks umbrella.

Why we’re drinking this: Coffey is the seventh limited-edition release from the distillery’s Master Blender Collection, which we’ve previously enjoyed exploring. “The Collection gives you a glimpse into what we do, pairing different distillation types with different barrel types,” explains Mount Gay’s Master Blender Trudiann Branker. “It’s things you wouldn’t traditionally see from Mount Gay.”

The Exhilarating Ways Skyscraper Hotels Around the World Put Their Rooftops to Use

Staying in a soaring skyscraper hotel offers guests a wonderful perspective of the city they’re visiting, whether it’s New York or Tokyo, Bangkok or Dubai. After all, even in our current age of skyscraper abundance, there’s still a finite number of places where you can check into a luxury property and enjoy that type of vantage point. Why stop there, though? A great view is one thing; being able to truly capitalize on a hotel’s spectacular, outstretched size is another. That means taking to the sky and getting some fresh air, whether it’s for an exhilarating bit of adventure or perhaps a tantalizing but more low-key beverage.

Celtuce Is the Star of This Summer Seafood Dish

Also known as celery lettuce, stem lettuce, Chinese lettuce and asparagus lettuce, the word celtuce comes from the combination of celery (which has similar looks) and lettuce (of which it’s a species). It’s been prominent in Chinese (and Taiwanese and Singaporean) cuisine for centuries, but it’s only recently made its way to Western markets.

The menu at at Figure Eight in New York’s West Village is inspired by restaurateur Emmeline Zhao’s Chinese American upbringing in North Carolina. Growing up, her parents did their best to cook Chinese meals, using the ingredients that were available to them on the lower Atlantic coast. At Figure Eight, this has translated to dishes like mapo buttered grits, fried skate with chili crisp and this phenomenal razor clam recipe, where the bivalves are dressed up with celtuce and a vegetable XO sauce.
