A week after saying that social media platforms should contain a warning about their effect on adolescents’ mental health, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has declared gun violence a public health crisis.

Although many conservatives criticized the move, Jennifer Graham writes, “There are sound reasons to consider firearm deaths and injuries a matter of public health, and this move is consistent with efforts to recognize other damaging forces in society that, directly or indirectly, affect life expectancy or quality of life.”

AP: John Curtis wins Utah GOP Senate primary race

Rep. John Curtis was projected to win the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Utah by The Associated Press after leading his opponents by more than 26 percentage points when the first round of primary election results were released Tuesday night in the race to replace outgoing Sen. Mitt Romney.

“Figuring out how to thank you is very difficult,” Curtis said to his family and supporters on Tuesday night. “And you can’t say thank you without saying thank you to your family. If you want to know why in the end I did this, it’s the 17 grandkids.”

The 3rd District congressman received 54% of early votes, consisting mostly of mail-in ballots received before Election Day, while Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs received 27.5%, former Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson received 13% and Moxie Pest Control CEO Jason Walton received 6%.

AP calls the race for Gov. Spencer Cox in GOP primary against Phil Lyman

Tuesday night brought the contentious Republican primary between incumbent Gov. Spencer Cox and challenger Rep. Phil Lyman, R-Blanding, to a close.

With 64% of votes counted by 8:30 p.m., Cox was ahead of Lyman, 59.5%-40.5%, according to The Associated Press.

“Tonight, we restored our faith in the Republican Party and our faith in the people of Utah,” Cox said at his primary election night party in Salt Lake City. “They don’t respond to the lies, to the made-up conspiracy theories. We do things the right way in Utah, and I’m just so proud.”
