TODAY'S TOP STORY

Pay attention: Life has changed again

Pay attention: Life has changed again

Yesterday was a big deal in the tech world. Apple put on a flashy show outlining new products set to be released just in time for this year’s holiday gift-giving.

Even if you’re not an Apple fan, you need to know what’s coming. No, I’m not going to link to a vid for you to watch. I sat through it for you … two hours, six minutes and 11 seconds (not that I was counting).

Doubling down on AR

Apple hasn't really introduced a new product for 10 years. That was the Apple Watch. It made up for this lack of innovation with its new augmented reality (AR) goggles, "Vision Pro."

Instead of clumsy Oculus-type headsets, Vision Pro looks like a scuba mask. The front can be transparent so you can see the outside world. Or, if you’re working confidentially, it turns reflective like a mirror. Yes, you can play video games. But for $3,500, it'd better be for more than just games.

Vision Pro will completely replace your TV and video monitor. Apps, documents, videos, movies and anything you’d see on a screen appear suspended in front of you. Your eyes, hands and voice replace your mouse. It’s made to fit different face shapes and sizes. It’ll be out in about six months.

My cynical husband came into my office and said, “I never want any new tech, but I really want those Apple glasses.” I was so tempted to tell him that’s never going to happen.

iOS 17 brings back call screening

If you’re new to Apple-land, iOS is the software that runs the iPhone. We’ll get the latest version, iOS 17, in mid-September. Your iPad and Apple Watch run their own iOS versions.

A lot of people watching the Apple show were excited by this trick. Soon, you’ll get a voicemail transcription in real time and decide whether or not to answer the phone. Well, I can’t remember the last time I left someone a voicemail. If the person doesn’t answer, I text them.

Core changes:

  • A better MacBook Air: The $1,299 15-inch MacBook Air is the thinnest of its kind, at 11.5mm. It weighs three pounds, gets 18 hours of battery life and ships June 13. Note: This is why I’ve been telling you not to buy a new MacBook for the last three months.
  • iPadOS 17 finally works with PDFs: Fill out info and leave signatures on PDFs, including ones you scan. Open PDFs in the Notes app to annotate, edit and collaborate in real time.
  • Safari privacy updates: Safari will lock your private browser windows when you’re not using them and remove URL trackers. You’ll also be able to share Passkeys (aka logging in without a password) with people you trust.
  • AirPods trick: If you run into a friend while out walking with your AirPods Pro, the music in your ears will lower so you can hear them better. Nifty.
  • watchOS 10: Apps like Activity have been overhauled for the Apple Watch so they’re easier to see. You can also turn the digital crown to see widgets and get information faster from any watch face.
  • Personal Voice: You can use artificial intelligence to create a replica of your voice in about 15 minutes. This is cool. It’s designed for people who are losing their voice.

✅ Now, you have enough right here to have a convo with the best and sound like you know what you’re talking about. Obviously, Apple filled those two hours with a lot more product announcements. If you want the complete lowdown, check it out on my site here!

DEAL OF THE DAY

💦 Don’t have a water leak disaster ...

💦 Don’t have a water leak disaster ...

... especially if you don’t notice the leak for a long time! Water leak sensors do it for you, and this smart one from D‑Link is one of the best. Plug it in, connect it to your Wi-Fi and you’ll get a notification if any leaks are detected. It includes a 19-inch cable that senses water leaks and a 38-inch extension cord. It supports up to 16 sensors, so pop one by the washer, water heater and anywhere else you want. Truly smart tech!

It’s 25% off right now!

WEB WATERCOOLER

Chrome pwned: Check your system for 32 nasty Chrome extensions that send you ads and mess with your system. The top five most downloaded: Autoskip for Youtube, Soundboost, Crystal Ad block, Brisk VPN and Clipboard Helper. See the rest here.

✈️ Skip the TSA line for free this summer: Go to Clear’s website or app and sign up for Reserve. No fingerprinting, eye scans, background checks or interviews required. Once you arrive at airport security, someone will scan your QR code and take you to the front of a TSA line. Yep, it’s free. TSA PSA: It’s a bad idea to say hi to your friend, Jack, in the TSA line.

Great balls of fire: Fire extinguisher balls (yes, that’s a thing) sold on Amazon from VYXON, TATTCHINE, ARMYJY, PETSTIBLE, HelloPharma, Vixuiyz and JHEUAYK aren’t safe to use, says the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Have one? Throw it out.

Seconds matter: A woman died after the person attempting to save her life was forced to watch 18 seconds of ads on a YouTube CPR tutorial. YouTube is running up to 3 minutes of ads on first aid videos, and some are only skippable after 30 seconds. Unbelievable. Forget vids. Take a CPR Class.

📺 Live from … Mars: The European Space Agency marks 20 years of the Mars Express with a live look at what’s going down on the Red Planet. It takes up to 22 minutes for us to get “live” pictures of Mars down here on Earth, so it’s not technically a live stream, but still pretty dang cool. See it here.

Hackers ruin everything: Gmail’s blue checkmarks should mean the email comes from a trustworthy source. I paid $5,000 to get my company’s blue Gmail checkmark. Hackers are exploiting a security flaw that can fool Gmail’s security system. So, if you see a blue checkmark with a spam email, it’s still spam.

Google at work: You might be one of 9 million organizations with beta access to Google’s passkey. Use your phone or computer’s fingerprint or face scanner to log in instead of typing a long, complex, hard-to-remember password. Cue the Hallelujah Chorus.

🤳 AI takes on history: I can’t wait for you to see this vid. It’s a compilation of famous historical figures taking selfies and posting them on social media. It’s amazing, really. Take a minute right now and watch it here. You will love it like I did!

Happens to the best of us: Most-misspelled words

Happens to the best of us: Most-misspelled words

When I think “embarrassing searches,” they’re not … those kinds. They’re the ones where I’m trying to figure out how to spell a word I definitely should know how to spell. I’m not alone. We all use search engines as a dictionary these days.

But which words are the hardest to spell? The folks at Unscramble Words (a Scrabble cheater/helper site) looked at a year of Google Search data to spill the beans.

Do you struggle with any of these?

  1. Restaurant - 95,000 searches
  2. Pneumonia - 13,000
  3. Appreciate - 11,000
  4. Receipt - 9,700
  5. Beautiful - 9,400
  6. Niece - 9,200
  7. Maintenance - 8,500
  8. Bougie - 8,300
  9. Diarrhea - 8,200
  10. Congratulations - 7,100

Words I’m surprised didn’t make the top 10:

  • Calendar (I commonly see this written as calender)
  • Conscience (that S and C every time)
  • Sergeant (not sargent)
  • Embarrass (all those double letters are tricky)
  • Guarantee (this one is easy to mess up)
  • Accommodation (the Cs and Ms get you)

😳 Speaking of misspellings … Google was originally intended to be spelled "Googol," a mathematical term for 10 raised to the power of 100.

The person filling out the domain registration paperwork misspelled the name. But the founders decided to stick with the mistake. I mean, at least it wasn’t a typo on a tombstone. That’s a grave mistake.

DEVICE ADVICE

Are old videos, screenshots or apps the culprit?

Ah, the dreaded “Storage full” notification. When the iPhone debuted in 2007, it only had 4GB of storage (that’s only about 1,300 photos!). We have much more storage space now, but you can still run out.

  • To find what’s taking up all the space on an iPhone: Open Settings > General then tap iPhone Storage. You’ll see a list showing what’s taking up space, from most to least.
  • If you have an Android: Open Settings > Storage. See apps you don’t use? Delete them.

👊 iOS and Android pro tip: Streaming apps on your phone like Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video let you download movies and shows for offline viewing. Major space hogs! They’re easy to clear.

Let’s say you have downloads on Netflix. Open the app and tap Downloads on the bottom right. From there, you can find and delete them.

😩 Stop yer whining, “Oh, Kim, phone this and tablet that. What about my PC?” Here’s how to find out what’s eating up your storage on your PC or Mac. You’re welcome.

The age at which the artist Prince wrote, arranged, sang and played all the instruments for his original demo tape. Now, the reel-to-reel tape, recorded in 1976, is being auctioned off. It’s from the estate of a Warner Bros. Records executive who signed him — and this Prince’s work is not royalty-free.

WHAT THE TECH?

What the tech?

What are the job’s “bear minimum” qualifications?

UNTIL NEXT TIME ...

The answer: 🏠 👦🏼 is emoji speak for the 1990 movie “Home Alone.” I watch it every Christmas. Here’s something about the movie you may not know. The film’s famous quote, “Keep the change, ya filthy animal,” is actually from a fictional gangster movie called “Angels with Filthy Souls” created just for the film.
