Attend PICOF 2024

Be sure to check out the Philippine International Comics Festival this month, to see an exhibit from one of the collaborations from last year's Connections Through Culture round.

Comics Create a Better World, from partners Lakes International Comic Art Festival and Komiket, will be displaying the first results of their project on 20-21 July, in the The Podium.

Building on a 2021 collaboration, the project focuses on exchanging knowledge between UK and Filipino creators to engage children and young people in the process of creating their own original work on climate change. Key elements include selecting creators from underrepresented communities in the UK and the Philippines, providing virtual training sessions, and mentoring the creators for workshops with young people.

CIP alumni honoured at the Good Design Awards 2024

We are happy to share that four alumni of the Creative Innovators Programme were honoured at the Good Design Award Philippines on 29 June 2024.

The alumni were: Jodinand Aguillon, who represented First United Building/HUB: Make Lab; Cham Lopez, who represented Anthill Fabric Gallery; Unyx Sta. Ana, who represented Zapateria, and Kae Batiquin, who represented HoliCOW. The four will advance to the 2nd screening of the Good Design Award Japan.

The Creative Innovators Programme ran from 2018-2021. It was led by British Council in the Philippines in collaboration with DTI Design Center, and with the involvement of the Apl.de.Ap Foundation and Thames International. It aimed to contribute to more sustainable and impact-led creative hubs to support the  Philippines’ creative industries.

Kinemalaya Pride Screenings

In celebration of Pride month, British Council in the Philippines joined the Kinemelaya Pride screenings from Northern Luzon Pride in Baguio City.

A total of 18 queer short films were screened on 9, 16, and 23 June, including three from the UK: Take Your Partners by Siri Rødnes, The Men Who Speak Gayle by Andrew Brukman, and Ted & Noel by Julia Alcamo.

On the final day, British Council also moderated a panel on Creating queer safe space in film, with Faye Olayo, Celeste Lapida, Julianne Reyes, and Era Abuan.

#thefutureiscreative at the Benilde Open

Last 25 June, British Council in the Philippines Head of Arts, Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan, moderated a talk at the Benilde Open called #thefutureiscreative. The conversation delved into the current creative industries landscape of the Philippines, highlighting trends, challenges, and opportunities.

The panellists included Toff De Venecia, House of Representatives member for the 4th district of Pangasinan, Pauline Juan, former executive director for Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions, and Erwin Romulo, writer, editor, music producer and creative consultant.
