Dr. Cathriona Foley's research aims to create a new treatment to stop the spread of Colorectal cancer (also known as Bowel Cancer).
Commenting on her research Dr. Foley said:
‘Colorectal cancer rates are on the rise in young adults. Considering bowel cancer screening begins at 59 years of age in Ireland, more patients may present with later stages of the disease in the years ahead. This research is important as it strives to develop a new protocol for a therapy to treat and prevent metastasis of colorectal cancer’ .
🔍 Why is this research crucial? Cancer often comes back after surgery because some cells hide and multiply. Plus, surgery causes inflammation, which can make immune cells less effective against cancer. But the work that Dr. Foley and her team are doing could change that!
👩⚕️ How? By growing special immune cells from any healthy donor's blood, we could give them to people with colorectal cancer after surgery. These supercharged cells could hunt down any remaining cancer cells and stop them from spreading.
👨🔬 What's next? Dr. Foley's team will study cells from tumours to understand how to make these immune cells even stronger. This could lead to a new treatment combining surgery and immunotherapy to prevent cancer from coming back.
