Join us this Saturday for A Prairie Home Companion! EMMYLOU HARRISEmmylou Harris’s albums are mainstays in any music fan’s collection: Wrecking Ball, Luxury Liner, Roses in the Snow, The Ballad of Sally Rose, Trio, Red Dirt Girl. The list goes on and on. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, and raised in North Carolina and Virginia, Harris began playing the guitar at 16 and eventually left college to pursue a career in music. In the early 1970s, she moved to Los Angeles and joined forces with Gram Parsons, with whom she made two albums. After Parsons’ death in 1973, Harris made her major label debut, Pieces of the Sky. Now, after more than 50 years of performing and countless awards, including 14 Grammy Awards plus induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Emmylou maintains a widespread and loyal following, whether she’s singing folk, country, pop or traditional tunes. On this broadcast, she joined Mark Knopfler to share several songs from their duet album. MARK KNOPFLERMark Knopfler is perhaps best known as the lead guitarist and vocalist for Dire Straits, but he’s also a producer (for artists such as Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, and Randy Newman) and composer, including film scores for Local Hero, The Princess Bride, Wag the Dog, and others. He grew up in the northeast of England, and played in bands as a kid. After high school, he took a journalism course at a technical college, then pursued an English degree at Leeds University. In the late 1970s, he formed the phenomenally successful British rock band Dire Straits, with which he released a string of hit albums, including Brothers in Arms, one of the top-selling records in British history. The group disbanded in the mid-’90s, and Knopfler launched his solo career with the album Golden Heart. JEARLYN STEELEGrowing up in Indiana, Jearlyn Steele sang with her siblings as The Steele Children. One by one, they moved to Minnesota and started singing together again. Now music is the family business. Jearlyn has recorded and performed with Prince, George Clinton, Mavis Staples, and others. She also hosts Steele Talkin’, a Sunday-night radio show that originates on WCCO in Minneapolis. Listening to these old broadcasts, it is amazing the amount of writing that our host created for each show! At tour locations, Garrison often included bits of trivia or history in the scripts. And he might create a song or two about the host city or state. Here, he wrote an ode to the “Streets of Rochester.” As I walked out on the streets of Rochester As I walked down by the clinic one day I saw an old cowboy dressed in white linen I could see he was old ‘cause his hair had turned gray. “I can see by your outfit that you are a doctor,” He said to me quietly as I walked by. “Please take a moment and hear my sad story, I am an old cowboy and I don’t want to die.” I’ve been having headaches and sometimes I’m dizzy I’m always exhausted and that is no lie. And I can’t remember if it’s Thursday or Friday Or who’s in the White House these days or why. Could it be a reaction to certain food additives? Or a lack of vitamins, or maybe the flu. Or maybe my spine needs a very slight adjustment Please help me doctor, what should I do? The doctor leaned down and he took out his stethoscope He listened for a minute and then he deduced From the sound of the gurgling in the heart of the cowboy That his mitral valve had come loose. He was put on a gurney and shipped into surgery, They opened him up, took a nip and a tuck, And sewed him back up and shipped him to ICU And there he awakened to his very good luck. It makes a better song if the cowboy has perished, And his comrades carry him in a coffin draped with black, But this cowboy’s grateful to be among the living, And I thank my heart surgeon, Dr. Thomas Orszulak. He is a cowboy who loves riding his Harley, He’s a fly fisherman who ties his own lures, He tied up my heart so it beats with the best of them And here is a song from my heart to yours.DUETS 2 from A Prairie Home Companion — click here to purchase“The world is full of lonesome singers, bless their hearts, who need to tell us about their empty days and weepy nights, but the answer to their dilemma is so simple: find someone to sing with and feel better. Our radio show has been working on behalf of duetology for years and this 2nd volume of duets from the show is proof. Whether the voice is united with that of a sibling, pal, life partner, or someone you only met last Tuesday, the result can be delightful and moving. And because it’s the performers’ relatives who buy their CDs, sales are doubled.” —Garrison Keillor Duets have been a hallmark of A Prairie Home Companion.
