Are the Saints still in the Derek Carr sweepstakes?

Good morning, happy Valentine's Day and welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for Tuesday, February 14.

Maybe you missed it this weekend while taking in some early Mardi Gras parades or barbecuing with friends in the back yard before the Super Bowl, but it turns out the Saints will not be trading for Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr after all.

That's not to say the two sides won't join forces by the time the dust settles. Allow me to explain.

Carr has more than $40 million in guaranteed money that becomes, well, guaranteed tomorrow if the Raiders don't act quickly. The quarterback essentially took the decision out of their hands, informing the team he would be exercising his no-trade clause, refusing to sign off on any trade. Effectively, this means the Raiders are all but guaranteed to release him.

In one way, this is good for the Saints. They won't have to send draft pick compensation to the Raiders, and they can work on a contract that is more manageable than the one they would have inherited in a trade.

Then again, when the possibility of a trade was being discussed, it was the Saints and nobody else. You can probably bet that won't be the case if Carr becomes a free agent, as expected.

We get into all of that here. Meanwhile, the rest of our crew looks at the fall out from Super Bowl LVII.

That's all for today. We'll keep our ear to the ground, and y'all stay tuned for what it sure to be a hectic couple weeks around here.

Cheers,

Luke Johnson
