Efforts to improve relationships can pay dividends in the broader society. Just look at Utah
Can the government help your marriage, or help you learn to be a better spouse or parent? How many couples could find their well-being catalyzed with just a little more relationship education, motivation and effort?
Since 2006, the United States government has provided grants to support preventative educational programs that help fathers stay involved with their children and couples sustain healthy relationships.
The importance placed upon relationships and family is something Utah is known for — in fact, a 2020 congressional report spearheaded by Utah Sen. Mike Lee, “A Policy Agenda for Social Capital,” highlights these policy efforts.
Utah consistently ranks as the state with the highest social capital, with recent U.S. census figures confirming 93% of couples in the state are married — by far the highest in the nation. Given that statistic, Lee argues that the Beehive State “provides an aspirational vision of what could be elsewhere.”

The sports section, like daily printed newspapers, is fast disappearing. Just last month, The New York Times discontinued its sports page. Lee Benson writes that another news giant has followed suit in reducing its sports coverage on the whole.
For Benson, this is disheartening. He describes daily sports sections as what drew him to journalism in his younger days. He wanted to write about the games he watched, talk to athletes and form relationships with staff writers. And he did — for a while.
Benson writes, "Like with a lot of things, I thought it would always be like that. I’d have bet a lot of money the Soviet Union would never break up, BYU and Utah would play each other every year in football without fail and printed newspapers would never die, especially sports sections."
Now, sports journalism is shifting.
