Spiritual abuse in the church.

I receive many complaints when I talk about spiritual abuse in the church.
They say my criticism is unfair because spiritual abuse is so rare.

But they’re wrong. I continue addressing it because I believe millions of people experience spiritual abuse at the hands of their churches and its leadership. It’s real and prevalent and happening right now.
Spiritual abuse is when spiritual leaders abuse their power and spiritual ideas to create a toxic culture of shame and control to fulfil their own desires.

Some think abuse is just violent treatment of another person.
But when people’s freedoms are restricted or violated, this is a subtle form of abuse.

It’s violence against the human spirit.

Spiritual abuse can look like:

  1. You are not allowed to speak your mind.
  2. You feel shame but can't apologize enough
  3. You live in constant fear of outbursts of anger.
  4. You feel less empowered with them than with others.

If you’re not sure you’re being abused, ask yourself these questions.

  1. Am I confused about what’s happening?
This is about being in control of your thoughts. Confusion can indicate a loss of power. It can mean that something is happening that you didn’t consent to.

  2. Do I have a weird feeling?
This is about being in control of your emotions. Emotions can be overwhelming. Sad? Anxious? Panicked? Afraid? You’re having this feeling because it’s a response to something happening to you. Try to discern what’s causing it.

  3. Would I have asked for this?
This is about being in charge of your personal agency. This is about empowerment. You alone are the master of your life. If this is something you wouldn’t ever ask for, then don’t do it or receive it.

  4. Why is my body reacting this way?
Increased heart rate? Sweating? Chills? Shivering? Pain? Headache? Tears? Often your body knows before you do that something is wrong. Listen to it. Then get your body out of there.
I wrote an article on Why The Church Is The Perfect Culture For Spiritual Abuse. I would love to know what you think!
