New attitudes about working altered the labor market
(Pixabay)
For family, health and other reasons during the pandemic, many people changed their views about work, but at the same time they gained power as employers struggled to hire and maintain operations. At some nursing homes, for example, a "collapse in the supply of qualified workers effectively signaled that people were no longer willing to tolerate the same conditions for the same pay."

"Companies can offer a robust set of mental health resources and still end up with burnt-out, miserable employees if they aren't investing in regular compensation review, manager training, and realistic workload expectations," says Kate Beckman, executive manager for community and insights at RippleMatch.

The HR Leader
Your ego may be getting in the way of your leadership if you think you're the smartest person in the room, you blame others for your mistakes, you lack humility or are averse to self-reflection, writes LaRae Quy. My daughter Kawai and I were talking about her job recently. She manages some of the hiring for her company and it’s been an uphill battle in recent months.

People don’t want to work for minimum wage, she says. “I’ve had people come to me (with little to no work experience) wanting $18 an hour off the bat,” she told me. “They haven’t learned that it takes time to get there.”

That conversation popped into my head as I read today’s issue. It’s hard being an employer these days, isn’t it? Keeping up with new wage transparency laws; meeting employee demand for mental health benefits; dealing with new attitudes about work; and scrambling to stay ahead of employee turnover -- it’s a bear.

How are you managing it all? What are your biggest challenges? Let me know! And if you enjoy this brief, tell others so they can benefit also.
