| | What Should Your Engagement Agreement Include? | | In the October issue of the New York State Bar Journal, I contributed an article on what your engagement agreement should include. The article is reprinted with permission from: New York State Bar Association Journal, October 2018, Vol. 90, No. 8, published by the New York State Bar Association, One Elk Street, Albany, NY 12207. The single most important document that defines the attorney-client relationship is the retainer agreement or engagement letter. Regardless of the type of matter, the value of the deal or anticipated award, having a written engagement agreement or retainer letter is a smart move, even if it is not required. A written engagement agreement can protect both lawyer and client. It makes the relationship clear to the client, helps the client to value and take the lawyerâs work seriously, and it memorializes the agreement and the scope of work to be performed in the event that any dispute should arise later. Becoming a More Connected Law Firm Leader | | The November/December issue of Law Practice Magazine was the leadership issue (remember last month's focus on leadership in the Lawyer Meltdown Newsletter?), but my article on becoming a more connected law firm leader also goes to communication.
