| Winter Weather
Weather lore holds that as the day lengthens, so the cold strengthens. This will be true from the U.S. Heartland westward to the Pacific and in the Southwest’s Desert and Pacific regions, but The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a warmer and wetter winter for most of the country. |
|
| Dear Winter Wonderlanders, This year, winter officially begins on December 21 at 11:19 p.m. EDT, when the Sun reaches its greatest declination south of the celestial equator. The days around the 21st may be the shortest and darkest of the year, but this means only that we’ll see more and more sunlight until the vernal equinox on March 19 at 11:50 p.m. EDT—the earliest in 124 years! This winter’s forecast may be welcome news if you like slightly warmer weather. We believe that warming trends will dominate in the eastern and northern parts of the nation this winter, with below-normal temperatures limited to the Southwest. You can expect below-normal precipitation in Florida and along the Gulf Coast area, as well as in Texas, Oklahoma, the Upper Midwest, the western Desert Southwest, central California, and western Hawaii. Elsewhere, precipitation will be above normal. As for snow, expect more than normal if you live in the area from the southern Appalachians northward through western Pennsylvania and across most of the country, including the eastern Desert Southwest. |

December Days | December is named for decem, the 10th month of the year in the early Roman calendar. Now our 12th month, of course, December marks the end of autumn and the beginning of winter. Although many regions of the country will experience a warmer-than-average winter (8 degrees above normal in the Upper Midwest this month!), The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting that parts of Alaska will see an average temperature of –13°F—that’s 6 degrees below normal! December will also be slightly drier across most of the country, with the exception of the Southeast and Alaska, which will see ever so slightly above average precipitation; the Pacific Southwest, which can expect 1 inch more precipitation than normal; and eastern Hawaii, where precipitation is expected to be 10 inches above normal. | | January Heat Wave | The Roman god Janus is often depicted with two faces: one looking into the past, the other into the future. This year, much of the country can expect January temperatures to be around 5 degrees higher than normal, with temperatures in Alaska averaging 8 degrees above normal. The exceptions are Hawaii and the Pacific Southwest, both with temperatures 1 degree lower than usual, and the Intermountain region and Desert Southwest, where the predicted temperature will be 2 degrees lower than normal.
As for precipitation, only the Pacific Southwest can expect it to be below average. The largest variation is forecast for Hawaii; western islands can expect 10 inches more rain than normal. | February Forecast | With its name coming from the Latin februa, “to cleanse,” February was traditionally host to the Roman Februalia, a festival of purification and atonement. This month, temperatures are predicted to be slightly warmer than usual throughout the country, with the exceptions of the Pacific Southwest, the Desert Southwest, the High Plains, and the Heartland. Most regions can expect temperatures to be 1 to 2 degrees above normal. In northern Alaska, the average temperature is predicted to be –8°F—but this will be 6 degrees warmer than normal. Precipitation varies widely, with six regions getting more than usual, six regions less, and the remaining six forecast to receive normal rainfall. |

How We Predict the Weather | The Old Farmer’s Almanac—America’s oldest and most popular Almanac—uses a unique, age-old formula that’s traditionally 80% accurate. Our weather forecasting methodology stems from a secret formula that was devised by our founder, Robert B. Thomas, in 1792. Thomas believed that weather on Earth was influenced by sunspots, which are magnetic storms on the surface of the Sun. Notes about his formula are locked in a black box in our offices in Dublin, New Hampshire. Over the years, we have refined and enhanced this formula with state-of-the-art technology and modern scientific calculations. Last year, our overall accuracy rate in forecasting the direction of temperature change from normal for the winter was 88.9%. If you want more specific winter weather predictions—including when to expect snow, rain, and sunny skies—and much more useful information, wit, and wisdom, you can get all of it plus a bundle of BONUSES with an Old Farmer’s Almanac Best Value Club Charter Membership! | With an Old Farmer’s Almanac Best Value Club Charter Membership, you’ll get the handsome hardcover 2020 edition of the Almanac, the full-color monthly EXTRA! digital magazine with articles and other content not found in the print edition, plus a bundle of bonuses where you’ll not only learn more about weather expectations for each month of the year but also benefit from much more information on a range of useful topics.
