Hi John, It's Halloween and the world is a scary place. Many of my American friends are terrified. I’m not talking about the kids dressed up as vampires. I’m talking about the scary things happening in the church and in politics. Some get upset that I “get political” and say that I should stay in my lane… (religion). Funny, because I also get a lot of people who say I should stay out of their lane… (also religion) because I left it. Here’s an explanation of why and when I get involved in politics. Like in my province last week, the conservative government was voted out in a landslide. It's the first time since 1995! Why? Because people were tired of its anti-trans, anti-LGBTQIA, and anti-immigrant/refugee/foreigner attitudes and policies. I voted liberal for that reason. When the State encroaches on the human rights of others, fueled by fear, hate, discrimination, prejudice, privilege, and supremacy, I’m going to speak up. And when leaders exhibit these traits, I’m going to get specific. Most Jesus scholars agree that he wasn’t executed by the religious but by politicians. Okay… that’s my reason. I hope it helps. So… I draw cartoons that speak about injustices and make light of heavy things. If you’re feeling afraid right now, here are five cartoons to help you feel seen, loved, and accepted. |
