Seasonal affective disorder is a condition characterized by sadness, fatigue, loss of interest in activities and changes to weight and sleeping patterns, and affects 5% of Americans with symptoms that affect their ability to function, according to psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal. While there is still disagreement among scientists as to the exact causes of the condition, 30-minute exposure to bright light can treat it.
