Interface @ KG+ “Face House”

Kyoto, Japan April 13-22

I was reflecting on 20 years since I started capturing these images of faces. It took time for me to develop an eye for what kinds of faces to focus on. Of course, they are everywhere when you open up your attention to seeing them but my interest is in certain kinds of expressions - not always the most human-like but still a real emotion. Real emotions are sometimes subtle and quiet, like the face we wear when watching TV. Other real emotions are enigmatic and unfurl a kind of narrative when this part of our mind is opened up.

I'm grateful to present a solo exhibition of my Interface series at the most perfect venue in the world for this work — the "Face house" in Kyoto. I've built 2 dense wall installations with a number of supporting image groupings and this intense editing process led me to find ways for each small part to support something larger. I'm here in person and I will be in the gallery most afternoons so please reach out if you are local and want to meet up. I can also open the gallery early or stay late by appointment.

If you know anyone in Kyoto please send them this invitation!

Size Matters
A group show of small images associated with the wonderful "Medium festival of photography" in San Diego.

April 2 – April 27
Closing reception: Saturday, April 27, 6–8pm
Atheneaum Art Center, 1955 Julian Ave, San Diego

I will have one image from my series 6 Feet Apart. This is a new exploration taking these images of sidewalk COVID marks and transforming them into unique objects. I call these Artifacts: they are prints of my images that were placed on the sidewalk outdoors for a month or two during my exhibition in March 2023. The images became faded, scratched, stained, and torn. Now they are framed: protecting and commemorating the time they represent. They were captured from the sidewalk, put back on the sidewalk and then removed again — making a full circle.  They stand as a metaphor for the pandemic and how it has changed us.
