Today is Monday. Temperatures will be in the 70s with cloudy skies and a chance for scattered showers throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Maine jails didn’t require all to wear masks, even after York County outbreak grew

  • The Kennebec County Correctional Facility in Augusta wasn’t screening staff members for COVID-19 symptoms or checking their temperatures when they came to work. A majority of county jails hadn’t made all the arrangements recommended to contain outbreaks of COVID-19 if they happened, such as designating another facility where newly arrested inmates could be sent or creating plans to rapidly test all inmates and staff for the disease.
How historic drought affects potato harvest in Aroostook County

  • It isn’t business as usual this year because Aroostook County is experiencing a drought of historic proportions, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture declaring The County to be a drought disaster area. Rivers have dried up considerably, and potato crops, as with other crops in the area, have suffered due to the lack of water.

4 run for Bangor School Committee as it looks to hire new superintendent and address racism
  • The four candidates vying for three seats on the seven-member committee would take part in the hiring of a new superintendent. The committee is also in the midst of a number of anti-racism initiatives after Black students at Bangor High School came forward with their stories of racism at the predominantly white school.
Sanford pastor continues to defy state and local orders aimed to control virus spread

  • As city and county officials grapple to contain COVID-19, Todd Bell, the pastor who officiated the East Millinocket wedding that triggered Maine’s biggest outbreak — infecting 180 people and killing eight — remains unrepentant and continues to flout Maine’s masking and social distancing mandates.
Maine astronaut Jessica Meir is one of the most influential people of 2020
  • The Caribou native's accomplishments may very well have a lasting impact for future "major human endeavors," according to Time magazine, which named Jessica Meir one of 2020's most influential people.
As climate change threatens Maine fisheries, farmed oysters are a bright spot

  • Eastern oysters are native to Maine, and have long been harvested as food along the coast. But the current fishery got its start in the 1980s and has since grown to nearly 100 commercial lease sites. Climate change is not all bad news for the species.
