Hi John, I never imagined I’d be saying this, but one of my cartoons is now up on a billboard in Oklahoma. Yes, you read that right. A cartoon I drew to fulfill a commission, declaring the rights and dignity of trans people, is now sharing its message loud and clear on a highway. Art has always been my way of making sense of the world, of challenging what needs to be challenged, and of creating beauty in the places that need it most. Whether it’s on your screen, your wall, or unexpectedly on a billboard, I believe in art that tells the truth and makes us feel more alive. Cartoon: RIGHTS 🏳️⚧️ Dad Joke: Square root of 81? 😅 Quote: … more beautiful 🎨✨ Original: The Sins of Hate and Discrimination 🖤✊ Merch of the Week: Love Without the Fine Print ❤️ |
Never did I imagine I would be saying that this is my Cartoon of the Week! A billboard… with my artwork…what?! This billboard is now live on a highway in Oklahoma, thanks to a group with the courage to make a clear, beautiful statement. Subtle, but not. 🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️
I asked my German friend if he knew the square root of 81. He said no.
Art Challenging the Status Quo
Please let me be short and sweet. When I read Bosker’s book on her deep dive into the art world, it inspired me to become a better artist. I love art. Love making it. Love owning it. Love supporting other artists. Art does make life richer. Because it disturbs the status quo. If you’ve ever seen propaganda art, you know just how life-denying it is. It attempts to crush your intellect, dampen your spirit, and force you to conform. Art that is not propaganda art ignites your mind, jump-kicks your heart, and inspires you to be your most authentic self, despite all obstacles. I met a local artist the other day. She’s of Chinese Canadian descent, and her work is exhibited in museums and galleries. We shared pictures of our art. She works on paper mostly, as do I. She commented on how my paintings are very Eastern in mood. I told her my work is very inspired by Eastern art. That conversation was so enjoyable and affirming. I do want to make the world a more beautiful place. And I realize that this not only means creating beautiful art, but also creating art that disturbs the status quo and challenges anti-beauty. I do this through my cartoons (the challenging part) and my paintings (the beauty part). So here’s to the kind of art that sets us free, not the kind that shuts us down.
This cartoon speaks for itself. Pretty plain where the problem lies.
This T is a bestseller for a reason… How many times do we hear, "I love you but..." or "God loves you but..." I claim true love comes without the fine print. Love just loves. Love is love. Love is all. No disclaimers or provisions.
I couldn’t write this week’s newsletter without mentioning some of you in it, too! Wow, I’ve received some really cool pics from people in this epic community, rocking the nakedpastor merch! It really does make me smile and my heart happy! Please, keep sending them!!!
Thank you for being here, for seeing the art, sharing the love, and standing beside me in this creative and courageous journey. Your support gives my work meaning. Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am. Thank you! Much love, my friend, David P.S. After seeing my billboard, I want to remind you that I do commissions of all kinds. If you’re dreaming up something that you want to come to life or want something especially for you, let’s chat. I would love nothing more than to create something beautiful, just for you!
