FineArtViews - The AMP Newsletter

Hi There,

After drinking a little too much wine last Friday night, the song Bobby McGhee came on, and the song has been my earworm all week. What did Janice Joplin mean when she said "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose?"

I highly value freedom, so I've been pondering it. What actually exists that one could lose? If I have to "lose everything", what does "everything" even refer to?

It could refer to material things, perhaps. One could lose their phone, their keys, their car, their home, and even their loved ones. I often say, "Everything you own, owns you."

To be continued... on to art marketing topics...

Myth #4: You need to work on ranking in search engines for lots of keywords.

The Truth: SEO is a lot of work, very expensive, and provides virtually no payoff for most artists.

SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization is a widely known marketing strategy that is used to improve a website's search rankings when a user performs a Google search related to a specific product or service.

Essentially if you're searching for a product online, the first few results that appear on Google are the highest ranked pages. This is a critical marketing strategy for companies whose products and services have high demand and a lot of competition.

The difference between your website and the companies that do successfully utilize SEO strategies to increase their sales? Demand.

"Search marketing harvests demand, it doesn't create it"

- Seth Godin

If you're searching online for top marketing strategies, you're sure to come across thousands of resources online that will try to sell you a course or certification to teach you how to do SEO. I know how enticing that "guaranteed to increase sales" disclaimer can be on these courses.

The problem with SEO as it relates to your artist website is that people do not search for and buy art the same way that they may search for the best landscaping company in X area.

I'm not denying that SEO can be a very effective strategy to increase web traffic and drive higher sales, for certain companies and industries. But it's also a time-consuming and pricey marketing tool that offers very little, if any, ROI to artists who create and sell unique pieces of work.

As an artist, it's much more important for you to focus your time and energy on getting your name and your artwork out into the world.

You need to create the demand for your artwork that will drive visitors to your website.

Before people know about your art, they aren't searching for it. They only search for it after you've introduced them to it.

Purchasing art online is a unique transaction in that buyers still want to have that social experience that they receive in a gallery even though the sale is conducted entirely online.

Engagement and open conversation with your potential buyers is key to growing your art sales online. Social media, direct email, email newsletters, texts and phone calls provide an efficient and effective platform to deepen the relationship with your audience and drive people back to your website to purchase your artwork. Focus on those and don't worry about "SEO", no matter what the art marketing coaches tell you.

Stay tuned for next week's article where I'll discuss Myth #5: Use an online virtual room to display your art.

Until next time, remember that Fortune Favors the Bold Brush.

Sincerely,
