PARTITIONS Salma Arastu india cali usa toward CROSSING BORDERS IMMIGRANTS 48 x 72dim 2023

NEW YORK, NY.- The Borders are wide, various, concrete and philosophical, offering an illusion of safety and definitive organization of reality buttressed by or colliding with the shifts in perception, power alignments, cultural imperatives and agendas at play at any given moment both on the international and the personal, subjective stage. Borders as a theme not defined, but implied. The obvious way to look at Borders is as it relates to geographic demarcation and via socio-political implications, however, the artists in this exhibition take it one step further examining Borders that confound and limit us personally; Borders to be psychologically challenged, broken through and/or accepted. ... Halle für Kunst Steiermark opens an exhibition of works by Mathias Poledna
GRAZ.- Mathias Poledna has created a complex, multi-layered body of work in which films, expansive installations and architectural interventions are in constant dialog with each other, where independent series of works, found objects and ephemeral materials all condense to form a singular artistic language. Central to his practice are questions of modernity, cultural memory and the visual imaginary in art and popular culture. Poledna’s internationally acclaimed work reflects historicity against the backdrop of contemporary developments and examines the history of specific cultural phenomena staging and appropriating emblematic visual forms. Research, analysis and work with archives play an essential role in his artistic practice. Although his filmic images are consistently new and often produced in collaboration with specialists, they ... More

Exhibition presents works by artists who respond to the place of rivers in our lives
OSLO.- Between Rivers brings together the practices of contemporary artists who respond to the place of rivers in our lives at a moment when they are being profoundly reshaped by human activity. While rivers have been an important subject for artists since at least the nineteenth century and are at the center of significant developments in fields as varied as ecology and environmentalism, political organization and activism, and the built environment and architecture, in recent years they have been discussed with an increasing urgency. Reports of the Yangtze, Rhine, and Zambezi Rivers dropping to their lowest levels on record have appeared alongside accounts of atmospheric rivers causing some of California’s worst flooding. Systems that are crucial to the functioning of our contemporary world, such as the production of hydroelectricity, ... More

Jack Hanley Gallery opens Marie Lorenz's fourth solo exhibition with the gallery
NEW YORK, NY.- Jack Hanley Gallery is presenting Marie Lorenz's fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. DRIFT TILT features collage and kinetic sculpture cast from debris washed up on the city’s shore. These artworks reflect Lorenz’s ongoing exploration of New York by boat. Like objects emerging from an eroding bank, or a group of contemporary fossils, they preserve impressions of discarded objects, capturing each surface as they shift in significance. In 2022, during her collaboration on the opera Newtown Odyssey, Lorenz began experimenting with the pendulum as a tool for generating sound. A pendulum can regulate tempo, and demonstrate the laws of motion. In practices like dowsing or divination, it is believed to reveal hidden answers or detect energy fields. Pendulum clocks also played a vital role in early navigation, accurately measuring time on ships at sea. In DRIFT TILT, pendulums of steel and stone guide the viewer through a tipping landscape, keeping time, hinting at unseen forces ... More

Flashback
On a day like today, Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens died
October 18, 1678. Jacob Jordaens (19 May 1593 - 18 October 1678) was one of three Flemish Baroque painters, along with Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, to bring prestige to the Antwerp school of painting. Unlike those contemporaries he never traveled abroad to study Italian painting, and his career is marked by an indifference to their intellectual and courtly aspirations. In fact, except for a few short trips to locations in the Low Countries, he remained in Antwerp his entire life. As well as being a successful painter, he was a prominent designer of tapestries. Like Rubens, Jordaens painted altarpieces, mythological, and allegorical scenes, and after 1640—the year Rubens died—he was the most important painter in Antwerp for large-scale commissions and the status of his patrons increased in general.
