NEW YORK, NY.- A compelling new show at the Pace Gallery in New York City, Ad Reinhardt: Color Out of Darkness, comes with an unusual perk. It has been curated by James Turrell, as the subtitle proclaims. The prospect of Turrell, an American master of light, presiding over a show of paintings by Reinhardt, an American master of dark, has a special allure, offering not only two visions for the price of one but a glimpse at the improbable ways of inspiration. On a recent morning, I met Turrell at the gallery with plans to see his Reinhardt show. But first he led me into a pitch-black room at street level where he had just finished installing a piece of his own, After Effect. We sat down on a plain wooden bench to watch. What appeared to be a giant screen, framed in cherry-red light, rose up the ceiling. You could see through it, to an illuminated green rectangle in the far distance. As we talked, the greens blued into ultramarine or yellowed into chartreuse. It looke ... More |

ATHENS, GA.- In late 2021, the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia received a gift of $4.7 million from the W. Newton Morris Charitable Foundation. The gift will add to an existing fund established in 2000 to support the museum. The museums relationship with the W. Newton Morris Charitable Foundation dates back to 1999, when it was created upon Willis Newton Morris death. This recent gift is an expression of confidence in everything the museum has achieved in the past 23 years and in its fiscal responsibility. William U. Eiland, the museums director, knew Morris well. He tells a story about having lunch with Morris in Atlanta, at a restaurant well known for Key lime pie. While waiting on the valet, Eiland says he leaned down to pick up a penny. Morris told him later that if he hadnt done so, the museum wouldnt have gotten a dime. Generations of students and audiences will be beh ... More
A visitor at the Kinetismus: 100 Years of Electricity in Art exhibit, which features almost 100 artworks, in Prague on Feb. 20, 2022. Milan Bures for The New York Times.
by Annabelle Chapman
PRAGUE.- The Kunsthalle Praha, which opened in the former Zenger Electrical Substation here Tuesday, is not the first exhibition space in a former power station. Yet from the start, this privately funded redevelopment opposite Prague Castle is putting electrically powered art in the spotlight with its opening exhibition Kinetismus: 100 Years of Electricity in Art, running through June 20. Featuring almost 100 artworks, the exhibition shows how electricity transformed art over the past century, enabling artificial lighting and motion. With the arrival of household electricity in the 1920s, artists had new options available to them: They were no longer limited to static images and reliant on external ... More |

MARLBOROUGH, MASS.- Skinner Auctioneers sale of Colorfully Cast: A California Collection, the immense and delightfully rustic holdings of a California couple who spruced up their homes with incisively-chosen objects over the past three decades, attracted widespread interest with active bidding in every category. VIENNA.- A compelling dialogue between contemporary art and major works from the museum's collection: for the first time, the Belvedere is juxtaposing British artist Marc Quinn's suite of works Emotional Detox with the iconic "character heads of Baroque sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt. Messerschmidts work has long been an inspiration for Quinn and the direct influence of the character heads on the creation of Emotional Detox can now be seen at the Upper Belvedere. Marc Quinn's eight life-size sculptural self-portraits are the product of a challenging period in the artist's life. In the early 1990's, Quinn was struggling to overcome the physical and emotional agony of alcohol withdrawal. During this period, he regularly visited the Messerschmidt sculpture The Strong Smell at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This ... More

Gary Brooker, singer for Procol Harum, dies at 76 | | Collection of Los Angeles art dealer and patron Gail Feingarten Oppenheimer comes to auction at Bonhams | | Ana Navas wins the 15th edition of illySustainArt the award for young artists |
The pianist and singer composed the bands music for five decades, including the hit A Whiter Shade of Pale.
NEW YORK, NY.- Gary Brooker, the singer and pianist of the early progressive rock group Procol Harum, who co-wrote songs including A Whiter Shade of Pale, the improbable but overpowering hit during the 1967 Summer of Love, died Saturday at his home in Surrey, England. He was 76. Brooker had been receiving treatment for cancer, the band said in a statement confirming his death. With his grainy, weathered-sounding voice and a piano style steeped in gospel, classical music, blues and the British music hall, Brooker led Procol Harum in songs that mixed pomp and whimsy, orchestral grandeur and rock drive. Brooker composed nearly all of Procol Harums music; Keith Reid, who did not perform with the band, provided lyrics that invoked literary and historical allusions and spun tall tales, sometimes at the same time. Although A Whiter Shade of Pale was both its first and biggest hit, and the band steadfastly avoided showmanship, Procol Harum sustained a five-decade career. It reco ... More

Rising to prominence as a dealer during the burgeoning Los Angeles art scene in the 1960s, Gail continued to work as a dealer up until 2019. The notoriety of 'Gail's Gallery' emerged her as a prominent Los Angeles dealer, which eventually led to her meeting Charles Feingarten ... More

More Exposing the heart in a brutal dance of loveNEW YORK, NY.- Sometimes its hard to feel what you know a choreographer wants you to feel. In the case of Chapter 3: The Brutal Journey of the Heart, there is a lot of purposely awkward positioning of taffy-supple bodies: arched backs, far-flung arms, wide and ever-deepening pliés. This evening-length work, performed by the company L-E-V, dances and winds its way around themes related to the anguish that love brings. There is pleasure in the pain. It helps to know that "lev" means heart in Hebrew. In this final section of a trilogy exploring aspects of love by the companys artistic directors and founders, Sharon Eyal formerly a star of Batsheva Dance Company and, for a time, its house choreographer and Gai Behar, the heart is both muscular and tender.
