Persian Ferahan Sarouk, circa 1875, High Collectible. OAKLAND, CA.- In this installment of continuing series of interviews and articles featuring Claremont Rug Company founder/president Jan David Winitz, Art Daily spoke with him about Ferahan and Ferahan Sarouk carpets woven during the Second Golden Age of Persian Weaving (circa 1800 to circa 1910). Designed for an aristocratic regional clientele, the small rug-weaving workshops on the Ferahan Plain of West Central Persia developed a distinctive rug-weaving tradition in the 19th century. These rugs blended refined, curvilinear designs based on the museum-level carpets of the Safavid Dynasty with geometric influences from the surrounding tribes and villages. Ferahan carpets were one of the rug-making genres displayed at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873, which ushered in broad Western interest in Oriental rugs. ... More |

In an extraordinary story every bit as thrilling as an episode of Outlander, a newly discovered silver cup has revealed how the gold was smuggled out of the Highlands to London by an Englishman then sent to Bonnie Prince Charlie in France. As the Battle of Culloden raged between the British Army and the rebellious Jacobites on 16 April 1746, two French ships, Mars and Bellone, sailed towards Loch nan Uamh on the West coast of Scotland. They were laden with six casks filled with £35,000 worth of Louis dOrs (gold coins valued at £5 million today). The gold had been sent by the French King Louis XV to finance the rebellion. But they were too late. The Jacobites were beaten and those that survived ... Kennedy, even Prince Charles -- all have donned handmade ties from one shop in Naples so famed for its artisanal finery some devotees boast thousands. The painstaking needlework cannot be rushed, despite demand for E. Marinella ties usually far outstripping production. In Naples, the tiny shop near the sea remains much as it was when it opened in 1914, with its wood-framed windows, chandelier, and counter where the red, blue, polka dot or diamond-patterned ties are displayed. Maurizio Marinella, 64, who is the third generation to head up the company, says his family's success in the southern Italian city, which struggles with poverty and unemployment, was "a kind of miracle". "It all started in 20 square metres in Naples, where everything is a little more difficult than elsewhere," he told AFP. Maurizio's grandfather Eugenio wanted to create "a little ... More |

OLESNICE (AFP).- For Jiri Danzinger, settling on a line of work was a no-brainer: he grew up in a Czech family with a long tradition in blueprint dyeing. The 40-year-old craftsman is the 11th generation of a family living off the UNESCO-listed technique in the eastern village of Olesnice. Blueprint, which made its way to Europe in the 17th century, uses so-called resist printing, which involves dipping a large wooden stamp -- typically with a floral pattern -- into a gum arabic paste. Artisans like Danzinger then apply the pattern to white cotton fabric before submerging it in a tub of water dyed indigo blue. When he pulls out the ... More |

Louver and Betty Cuningham Gallery are presenting Charles Garabedian: Outside the Gates. Drawing from both galleries long histories with the artist, this exhibition brings together two dozen paintings from the last three decades of Garabedians life. The artists ability to tap into the collective unconscious renders the work timeless; while many of the figures may be familiar from myth, their staging speaks to our common lot as humans. With distinctive humor and pathos, Garabedian takes us on a trip as he moves toward finding himself in history, mythology, and by accident. Garabedian embraced grand themes in his idiosyncratic and compelling body of work. Inspired by Armenian manuscripts, Biblical stories, and the epic poetry of ancient Greece, his iconoclastic approach to figuration breathes vibrant, pulsating lif ... More UK Black Lives Matter sculpture removed LONDON (AFP).- A statue of an anti-racism protester in Britain which had replaced one of a slave trader was removed Thursday, local authorities said, in an ongoing battle over the symbolic empty plinth. The sculpture was secretly put in place on Wednesday, and was inspired by events in Bristol last month which saw anti-racism protesters remove the statue of slave trader Edward Colston and dump it in the local harbour. ...
