BERLIN.- The Siglo de Oro – the Golden Age of Spanish art – remains one of the most important chapters in European cultural history. Prominent painters of the era such as Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Zurbaran belong to the ranks of the greatest masters of art history just as much as do the sculptors Gregorio Fernández, Pedro de Mena and Juan Martínez Montañés. This summer, for the first time, 17th-century painting and sculpture in all its fascinating variety can be comprehensively explored outside of Spain: From 1 July 2016, the Gemäldegalerie, which itself holds one of the most important collections of Spanish painting in Germany, will be dedicated to the Golden Age with a large-scale exhibition featuring over 130 masterpieces from 64 international lenders, including the Museo del Prado in Madrid, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris and the Museo Nacional de Escultura i ... Suite of tapestries manufactured at Beauvais to a design by Jean Baptiste Monnoyer, 1695.

STOCKHOLM.- Thanks to a generous donation, Nationalmuseum has been successful in its bid to purchase and repatriate four woven tapestries manufactured at Beauvais. Commissioned in 1695 by Carl Piper for his residence in Stockholm’s old town, the wall hangings are still in fabulous condition after spending over a century in Denmark and the United States. Carl Piper (1647–1716) was a prime example of the commoners who rose through the ranks of the government bureaucracy during the reign of Karl XI, supplanting the old aristocracy. Piper was ennobled in 1678 and made a baron and a count in 1697. Seven years later he married Kristina Törne (1673–1752), the daughter of his stepbrother. In 1692, as a gift from his father-in-law, Piper received a large property in Gamla stan, Stockholm’s old town, which is now known as Petersenska huset. The foremost Swedish architect of the time, Nicodemus Tessin the Younger (1654–1728), ... More

Sebastiano del Piombo. Christ Carrying the Cross, 1515/1517. The Art Institute of Chicago.

CHICAGO, IL.- The Art Institute of Chicago announced today the exciting acquisition of Sebastiano del Piombo's Christ Carrying the Cross (1515/1517) to strengthen its focused collection of Italian High Renaissance painting. The first major discovery of a work by Sebastiano in recent years, it was brought to light by Colnaghi, the renowned London-based art gallery, who facilitated its transition to the museum's world-class collection. It represents one of the most popular compositions by one of the most distinguished painters working in Rome in the first half of the 16th century. Celebrated by the founding voice of art history, Giorgio Vasari, and given major commissions by Pope Clement VII, Sebastiano was hailed both in his time and beyond as a master of inventive painting who reimagined the monumentality and power of Michelangelo's style, and the grace and balance of Raphael's. "We couldn't be more thrilled to have this rare and wonderful opportuni ... More

GENEVA.- Gagosian Gallery is presenting "Zoology," Carsten Höller's first exhibition in Geneva. Trained as a scientist, Höller both echoes and surpasses scientific procedures in his work as an artist. Many of his projects invite viewer participation in order to question the facts and forms of human life. From carousels that reflect and disorient, to winding slippery slides, to vision-flipping goggles, Höller actively interrogates the functions of logic, perception, and entertainment in the larger biosphere. "Zoology" is a selection of Höller's recent sculptures, photographs, and prints, made between 2008 and 2016, which consider how different forms of animal life might relate to human embodied awareness. Through taxidermy, casting, molding, and collage, Höller presents beings that cannot be easily categorized: they are animals, but they do not occur in nature; they are the products of anthropocentric will—of mutation, ... New exhibition of works by the celebrated Irish painter Brian Maguire opens at Kerlin Gallery   Independent Curators International names Marian Goodman 2016 Leo Award r5ecipient   Appeal to save Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I reaches £2.7 million following rapid public response

Brian Maguire, Over Our Heads the Hollow Seas Closed Up.

DUBLIN.- Kerlin Gallery presents Over Our Heads the Hollow Seas Closed Up , a new exhibition of works by the celebrated Irish painter Brian Maguire (b. 1951). The exhibition opened on Thursday, 30 June, with a reception for the artist and continues until 20 August. Since the very beginning of his career in the 1970s, Maguire has approached painting as an act of solidarity. He operates a truly engaged practice, compelled by the raw realities of humanity’s violence against itself, and the potential for justice. Maguire’s preoccupations draw him to the margins of the art world—alternative space, prisons, women’s shelters, and psychiatric institutions—making shows in traditional gallery and museum spaces something of a rarity. The title of this new body of work, Over Our Heads the Hollow Seas Closed Up , is taken from Primo Levi’s If This Be a Man , in turn is quoting Dante’s Inferno . In these paintings, Maguir ...
