PARIS (AFP).- Neanderthal man knew how to make a fire by striking stone to create sparks, researchers said Thursday after analysing several tools found at sites in France dating from 50,000 years ago. It was already known that Neanderthals used fire but it was mostly thought to have occurred by natural causes such as lightning or volcanic eruptions, although perhaps they did know techniques for creating a flame. The latter is what scientists of a study published in Scientific Reports have claimed. "We present here the first direct artefactual evidence for regular, systematic fire production by Neanderthals," they wrote in the study. "We found the lighters that Neanderthal man used to make a fire," Marie Soressi, professor of prehistory at Leiden University in the Netherlands and co-author of the study, told AFP. Gagosian opens a cross-generational exhibition that pairs works by gallery artists based on generative resonance   Egypt archaeologists find 4,500-year-old pottery workshop   Sunset Strips to Soul: Perrotin Seoul opens exhibition of works by Zach Harris

SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Gagosian is presenting Echoes, a cross-generational exhibition that pairs works by gallery artists based on generative resonance: Adriana Varejão with Richard Artschwager, Mary Weatherford with John Chamberlain, and Jeff Wall with Cy Twombly. Two relief paintings by Varejão, made more than a decade apart, are shown with a painting and sculpture by Artschwager, both artists underscoring the agonistic nature of painterly discourse. The intricate surfaces of Varejão’s Ruína de Charque – Nova Capela (2003) and Bone-White Song (2017), which simulate broken or cracked ceramic tiles, reveal illusionistic flesh and blood within, suggesting a rather more turbulent sequel to the totalizing abstractions of modernism, while Artschwager’s Mirror (1964) and Seat of Judgment (2008) ... The workshop was built during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt (between 2613 and 2494 BC).

CAIRO (AFP).- Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered a pottery workshop dating back some 4,500 years, officials said Thursday, a rare discovery providing a glimpse into daily life from millenia ago. The find -- which included a stone pottery wheel -- was made close to the southern city of Aswan during work around the Temple of Kom Ombo on the banks of the Nile River, the antiquities ministry said. The workshop was built during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt (between 2613 and 2494 BC), a statement said, the same period in which the famous pyramids of Giza were constructed. "It is one of the rare finds that sheds light on daily life, industrial activities and the development of art in ancient Egypt," Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, said in the statement. Waziri said the discovery showed "the improvement and adaptation" of tools during the period as people "responded to the demands of ... More

Zach Harris, Eclipse Eye, 2018. Carved wood, water-based paint, ink. 99.1 × 91.4 cm | 39 × 36 in. Courtesy the Artist and Perrotin.

SEOUL.- Perrotin Seoul is happy to announce Zach Harris’ first show in Asia, and his second with the gallery, following his exhibition at Perrotin Paris in May 2017. Zach Harris’ carved panel paintings vacillate between pictorial realms. Within a single work, mathematical precision—an interest in systems, algorithms, and order—is integrated with feverishly drawn visions and complex color harmonies. The diverse aesthetic of Harris’ work eschews ready-made identity. Paint is used as an exploratory medium, while intricate shallow relief wood carving allows for intensive planning and exacting craftsmanship. The illusory nature of Harris’ painting skillfully modulates the tactile three-dimensionality of the object itself. Order and intuition, the tangible and the chimerical, the physical and the fanciful—these are the tensions with which Harris’ work is fraught. A carved frame, rigidly geometric, ... More

Having recently worked together on a rebranding assignment at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, they understood both the importance of this task and its potential. NEW YORK, NY.- Flowers Gallery is presenting a group exhibition of work by five artists, bound by their use of experimentation in devising rules to generate algorithmic form. The exhibition focuses on works created by a process analogous to the principles and practice of mathematics to generate patterns, rhythms and relationships through rules or systems with their own aesthetic and origin. In his seminal 1949 essay, “The Mathematical Way of Thinking in the Art of our Time”, Max Bill upheld that elementary mathematical patterns were embedded in the cosmos, underlying all human order and were present in all the structures that we recognized. He said, “The art presents the overall view of the world that we have today. The art does not depict nature, but rather creates new systems that make visible the underlying patterns.” As a ... More

LONDON.- HENI Publishing presents Seaside Shelters, a wonderful collection of vibrant and detailed images of a bygone era, brought together in a beautiful new book and accompanying London exhibition. Acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Will Scott has travelled throughout the UK to lovingly chronicle the definitive collection of these very British structures. Once a testament to the popularity of British summer holidays and the country’s inclement weather, many of these architectural gems now stand deserted, decorously preserved in time. Dedicated to documenting their faded grandeur and intricate designs, Scott travelled the length and breadth of Britain for the project, from iconic seaside resorts to lesser-known sites along the coast, including Blackpool, Margate, the Isle of Wight, Frinton-on-Sea, Southsea, Colwyn Bay, Weymouth and Exmouth. For so many these images evoke memories of childhood ... More

Artist and filmmaker Loretta Fahrenholz creates two new pieces for exhibition at mumok
VIENNA.- For her exhibition at mumok, Small Habit Revolution, artist and filmmaker Loretta Fahrenholz has created two new pieces that address key feminist works of the 1940s and their transfer into various Internet formats. Story in Reverse is a multi-part slide installation based on Ilse Aichinger’s Mirror Story (1949), a linguistic experiment that narrates a young woman’s tragically failed life. In Aichinger’s text the beginning and the end of life merge, as the story of the woman starts at her grave and is then told backwards by a second-person narrator. Her death is followed by an illegal abortion, she then falls in love, and becomes younger and younger, up to the day of her birth. Mirror Story contains contradictory premises and flashbacks, symbols and signs, and detailed depictions of the emotional world of the main character. Aichinger’s reversal of a life ... More

"Trail of Tears: A Story of Cherokee Removal" is open through January 2019

The Cherokee Trail of Tears is one of the most popular topics in American Indian history in elementary school. Yet, it typically receives only a cursory treatment in textbooks.
