NEW YORK, NY.- Glenn D. Lowry, Director of The Museum of Modern Art, today revealed the completed renovation of the east end of the Museums campus and unveiled the full design of a multi-year expansion project, developed by MoMA with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. The goals for the project are threefold: to increase gallery space and allow the Museum to exhibit significantly more of its diverse collection in deeper and more interdisciplinary ways, to provide visitors with a more welcoming and comfortable experience, and to better connect the Museum to the urban fabric of midtown Manhattan. The renovation of the east section, which began in February 2016 and is now complete, enhances galleries and public spaces on three floors. JERUSALEM (AFP).- Ai Weiwei said Thursday he sees US President Donald Trump as the "brand" for a global trend toward hatred and division, as the Chinese artist prepared to open a politically charged exhibition in Jerusalem. In an interview with AFP, Ai also expressed his passion for the cause of refugees and his criticism of his home country -- where he currently cannot return. At the same time, he spoke of the decision artists such as himself face when deciding to exhibit or perform in Israel due to calls for a boycott over the country's occupation of Palestinian territory. AMSTERDAM.- The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, custodian of the largest Kazimir Malevich collection outside the Russian Federation, has made an exciting discovery. A Malevich drawing came to light during an inventory of the Khardzhiev Collection at the Stedelijk. The find is a previously unknown preliminary drawing for Malevichs iconic painting An Englishman in Moscow (1914), one of the highlights of the Stedelijk collection. The Khardzhiev Collection is composed of a collection of Russian avant-garde art and the art historical library of the Russian literary scholar Nikolai Khardzhiev (1903-1996), and has been housed at the Stedelijk since 1998. In 2013-14 the bulk of the collection was the subject of a major Malevich retrospective at the Stedelijk, Tate Modern and Kunsthalle Bonn. Bill Walker identifies two instances of how stolen coins found their way back on the market.
DALLAS, TX.- Quick thinking on the part of a Heritage Auctions staff member led to the discovery of two high-value coins re-entering the marketplace. In January 2017 Bill Walker, a rare coin specialist in Heritage Auctions' Dallas office, was approached by a Florida coin dealer seeking to auction five rare coins. Walker began researching the coins and noticed that they all had been offered and sold in the firms' Florida United Numismatics (FUN) Auction in 2016. The winner purchased seven coins and the Florida dealer was offering five from the purchase. Realizing that the coins likely did not belong to the same person who successfully won the coins in the auction, Walker delved even further into the matter. Curiously, the dealer was being offered the coins for less than the recent auction records. WASHINGTON (AFP).- Police in the US capital on Thursday were investigating the discovery of a noose in an exhibit on racial segregation at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The grim find on Wednesday of the looped rope -- seen as a symbol of the lynchings of black men in the American South in the 19th and 20th centuries -- at the museum, not far from the White House, sparked universal condemnation. LONDON.- In July this year, Sothebys will offer the only version of one of the most iconic works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti to remain in private hands. A celebration of the beauty of the artists first mistress, Fanny Cornforth, and a pictorial hymn to her glorious corn-gold hair, Lady Lilith comes to auction for the first time in thirty years. The work was painted during Rossettis most innovative period in the 1860s, when he created the cult of the Pre-Raphaelite beauty, or Stunner as he called them, whose physical qualities were embodied by Fanny Cornforth. Two other paintings of Lady Lilith were produced by Rossetti during this decade and they now hang in museums in the US. MADRID (AFP).- British architecture superstar Norman Foster on Thursday inaugurated the headquarters of his foundation in Madrid to conduct research into sustainable cities and infrastructure. The Norman Foster Foundation will be led by Spanish architect Maria Nicanor, previously a curator at London's Victoria and Albert Museum and associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The foundation was born in 1999 but was run out of Foster's architectural practice in London and never had its own headquarters. NEW YORK (AFP).- A guitar of Grateful Dead legend Jerry Garcia on Wednesday raised more than $3 million at an auction to support a leading civil rights group. Known as Wolf, the custom-made electric guitar was a constant concert companion of Garcia until the jam rock icon died in 1995. The original buyer put the guitar back on auction to raise money for the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Alabama-based group which wages legal battles against white supremacists and other hate groups. At a charity concert in New York, Brian Halligan, the CEO and co-founder of marketing firm HubSpot, bought Wolf for $1.932 million including the premium. An anonymous charity matched his pre-premium $1.6 million bid, bringing the total donation for the Southern Poverty Law Center to $3.2 million. NEW YORK.- The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" album revolutionized not just music but cover art, enigmatically depicting 61 (mostly) famous people. Fifty years later, only five of them are still alive. At a time when album covers were usually glossy photos of artists, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" was a marvel for fans who were sent hunting for deeper meanings in an era before Google searches. The 1967 album showed The Beatles dressed up as a military brass band surrounded by sketches, photos or wax figures of 57 people from writers to Indian gurus to Karl Marx. Adding to the interactive aspect, the album came with cut-outs including paper mustaches that listeners could paste onto the cover. The jacket, with its flamboyant fringe detail at the elbows and waist, is offered at £15,000-20,000. A collection of Jones clothing, including the bespoke jacket, is being offered by Anna Wohlin, Jones girlfriend at the time of his death in 1969. VIENNA.- Dorotheum's 'Contemporary Art' auction on 30 May 2017 started with a bang. Emilio Vedova's large-scale 'tensione' (English: 'suspense') sold for 792,500, over five times its estimate, setting a world record for a work by this leading representative of Informalism. The historic 1959 work stems from 'formless', non-geometric, non-naturalistic art's heyday. Art Informel perfomed well overall all at the auction. The 1950 impasto painting 'Komposition' by Nicolas de Staël sold for 405,600. The Jean Fautrier painting 'Vegetaux' (1957) sold for 295,800.
